A 4 hour bus to Chetumal and a 2 hour boat took us into Belize which has to be one of the easiest crossings we've ever done. On the pier in Chetumal we got our passport stamped and paid 16Pasos (less tha a pound) departure tax, in the guide book it said it would be over 200Pasos, so that was good. Then the jet boat took us right to Caye Caulker, a little island off the Belizean coast. This is the best place to access the Blue Hole, some people may not know what this is and since we began diving we heard more and more about it and decided to do it. It's a geological site, a sink hole, which is made of limestone and goes down over 120m. Historically it would have been caves, above the water, before the last ice age as it consists of gigantic stalictites. So getting the chance to do this couldn't be missed. It was an early start at 5.30am, made earlier due to the nocturnal activities of our neighbours!! Anyway, our dive group of 14 were in the water at 8.30am and we descended rapidly to 46m. The visibility wasn't great but what we saw was spectacular. To be able to glide around these huge structures and get up close to them was amazing. Due to the depth we were down there for 8mins and then we ascended slowly, all in all an unforgettable experience.
The island has roads but no cars, only golf carts, lots of Rasta's and Bob Marley music. The Belikin beer tastes great and the fresh lobster tastes even better. I had it everyday for 3 days, did I say it costs as little as 10USD!! While we were diving Katy and Laura tried some diving and did a snorkeling trip, seeing reef sharks, eagle rays and turtles as well as the fresh lobster and crab that was gonna end up on our table.
So first impressions of Belize are great, the people are incredibly friendly ( to the point where complete strangers wish you well), they speak English Creole and we're looking forward to explorinig a bit more.
