There was some recent negative news about Tijuana but our hostel guys in San Diego assured us that we would have no problems getting into Mexico, the problems occur when you try and get back into the States. As we already found out! We got a Trolley bus to the border and were the only back packers walking towards the border, there's no immigration officers or scanning or anything. We were just about to go through the turn style when we realised we hadn't got a stamp or exit card. So we found an office, paid $20 and got the stamps. It was one of the quickest border crossings we've had.
We spent a couple of days in Mexico City, which we were apprehensive about due to our little bit of research. The Rough Guide talks about Bandits and dodgy taxis etc. So we went straight to our hostel on the Zocalo (Main Square) in the historic centre. Fortunately this area of the city is pretty safe, there is quite a police presence, which helps, but that doesn't spoil the fantastic buildings and general vibe of this area.
Mexico city and the surround has about 25 million people, the third largest in the world and the city sprawls throughout the valley. There is a huge divide between the rich and the poor and there are a lot of homeless. The government finds it hard to control the amount of people and some of the areas are very much like shanty towns. The people in these areas build their houses but don't paint them as this means the house is not complete and therefore they pay no taxes!!
We did a tour to Teotihuacan, an ancient city from 200BC, not much is known about it but it was amazing to see. We also explored some other ruins in the city, which were used to build Churches when the Spanish Conquest happened in 1521. The final part of the tour was Tequila tasting, this went down pretty well, but more practice is needed.
Before we caught our bus to Oaxaco, we walked through Grasshopper Park and visited the Anthropological Museum. We learnt that the Irish got involved with the war after Mexico killed American soldiers in The Alamo. As we know the Irish are everywhere and some of them got involved fighting with Mexico when the US stormed Mexico City.
Cheers guys.
