Unfortunately we were disappointed by breakfast this morning as there were no eggs! Apparently the shop had run out. On the up side not only did our taxi turn up but it was also 45mins early so we were soon underway heading towards Trinidad. The drive to Topes de Collantes was about 1.5hrs as we climbed up into the hills from Santa Clara. The driver didn't know the area so there was some discussion about him not wanting to find the walk we wanted to do but after a stop at the info centre & armed with a map we were able to find find the Jardin de Gigantes walk barely a kilometre from the main road. We paid our 4CUC each for the 30min walk through quiet tropical terrain with a couple of rickety swing bridges thrown in. We saw some very large mahogany trees (one of which was supposedly the largest in Cuba). The walk was enough to work up a sweat in the humid heat so back at the taxi it was windows down & on towards Trinidad about another half an hour away. The drive towards town saw us winding back down from the mountains towards the Caribbean with beautiful sea views along the way. Once in town the taxi couldn't quite get to the casa as it was in the gated off part of the old centre but it was only a short walk of a couple of blocks and we were knocking on the brass hand shaped knocker on the large green door. Our casa here in Trinidad was beautiful and as we were early we had time to look at the art work & antiques displayed in the original front part of the house and chat with the father Carlos who showed off his gramophones & 1950's jukebox all in working order as well as a very old wooden phone with lift up earpiece which also worked. After a strong nip of coffee our room was ready and it was equally beautifully decorated with white cast iron beds & antique furniture. We were also just one block from the main square, Plaza Major, along the cobblestone streets. After settling in we walked through the square & on to find the infotur to book transport to Vinales for the first. The infotur wasn't where it was supposed to be but we soon found it but the bus to Vinales no longer ran so instead we booked a collective taxi for 45CUC each which would save us a few hours in travel time anyway. We had a recommendation from the casa for a restaurant in the main square so we sat down for a late lunch/early dinner about 4pm. The food was ok, a bit plain but not too overpriced for the location. Feeling a bit hot after eating we returned to the casa to cool off & relax. We finally went out again about 9pm to the Casa de la Musica which was an outside bar which sprawled down the steps next to the church in the main square and had live music. We had a drink each which came to only 5CUC and managed to get some seats right near the dance floor. A Cuban guy asked me to dance but I pointed to mum as she has a higher threshold for creeps. He turned out to be nice enough, his name was Jose & invited us to his restaurant tomorrow for lunch, although we later found out it was quiet far away so didn't visit. The salsa band were very animated & the dance floor was very full by the time we left about 11pm. Cuba is certainly growing on us & Trinidad has a much better feel to it than Santa Clara. You really have to get into a relaxed mode here as nothing happens quickly but in this heat who would want to rush.
