Breakfast at the casa to start the day of travel although we needn't have got up so early as our collectivo minibus was 45mins late. We were just about to give up & go investigate other options when it was finally showed so we were soon heading towards La Habana! It was about a 3 hours trip & despite the guarantees of door to door service the minibus was too big to enter Old Havana so we were dropped at the Capital Building, which you really can't miss even half covered in scaffolding. It was a 5-10 min walk to the address we had for our casa. Arriving at the address we were a bit dismayed as it seemed rather run down & destitute but after enquiring it seemed we were actually across the road so we enquired there only to then discover that the lady had not held our reserved room with 2 beds & only had a room with 1 bed. She seemed very non-surpassed about the whole situation even though I had had numerous emails with her 'family friend' who reserved it & who I spoke to yesterday to confirm arrival. Giving up we decided to find our own accommodation. Across the road was a nice looking place but they had nothing available. The second place we checked around the corner had one night available & could then provide their cousins apartment for the other nights. The lady (Maria) could speak English well which was an advantage & the room was basic but large with a central position so we took it instead of spending half the afternoon looking for something which may not end up any better. The room was still being cleaned so we left our bags & went for a wander along the cobblestone streets further into the old town. We passed cathedral square & then stopped for a late lunch where we had a menu of the day for 12CUC including delicious bread with garlic butter, salad, a main (I had shredded beef- a Cuban dish) with a beer, flan for dessert & a great, if a little small coffee. It had started to rain so we wandered back to the casa & hibernated in our room for a bit. The casa owners mum had a sore shoulder & arm so mum ended up giving her a massage & was then her new best friend, apparently sent from God! It also meant that we could stay in the room the whole 3 nights & the casa owner would move her booking to the apartment instead. Later on, after 9 we went to a bar on Obispo street for a fairly ordinary meal & a drink to listen to some music although it seemed it was also a Mecca for very friendly very drunk Cuban girls. We returned to the casa after one drink before we were dragged to a club or vomited on by the intoxicated patrons.
