Another shore excursion this morning to see the Panama Canal. Onto the bus around 8.30 we firstly went to see the new canal section which was apparently 97% complete and would take much larger ships. The viewing area was well laid out but it was just like looking at a big concrete hole, although the movie they showed gave a bit of information about the expansion as well as history on the original canal. Upon leaving we had to drive across one of the new lock gates which was being used as a bridge which gave a better view of the new construction. The second part of the tour went to Gutan Locks which had canals in operation in both directions when we arrived. A huge container ship was being lifted up in the second lock to continue into Gutan lake and another cargo ship was being dropped down to the Atlantic on the other side. By the time we left they were taking ship down to the Atlantic on both sides. This part of the tour was more interesting, seeing the locks in action but as Sean said I like hunting sloths more & he likes engineering feats more. Back at the ship it was lunch time & then some washing/relaxing before going to look at the small rows of shops near the terminal. The beers certainly weren't as cheap here at the 'cruise ship is in town' price of $4 each but once again we used their wifi and otherwise didn't spend any money ashore (although the shore excursion was rather pricey at $129USD as entry fees were only $20 so the bus equated to $100!!). Back on board we had 6pm sushi & a drink as the ship departed (a little late as some shore excursions were delayed) then I went to an art scavenger hunt at the art gallery where you had to answer cryptic clues with the name of the artist who's painting matched the clue. There was only 2 teams but I won! I was given a set of maybe 8 prints, none of them to my taste but maybe eBay will like them. It was nearly dinner time again so to the dining room we went then back to the room afterwards to turn in early once again.
