Tony greeted us with a "Kalimera" almost as warm as the morning Rhodes sun. What a beautiful place! We drove around the bay to the marina where we saw the site of our second wonder of the ancient world this trip, the foot rests of the Colossus. Today the home of the two mascots of the Rodos people, the Male and Female Deer. Its also the home of the largest church in Rhodes with such an impressive interior the kids converted to catholicism on the spot! While Gab and I were admiring the decorations and talking to our guide, the kids had found the candles and lit one each, luckily it was almost empty.
We drove up the coast towards the Rhodes Acropolis, today just a few columns and an arch, the more impressive site is on the coast side as you look back down on the picturesque beach and resort areas.
It always sounds like a scam so when Tony suggested we visit a local ceramics family my guard went up, somehow the kids won though so off we went. They had a ball watching the pottery be turned and then decorated. The skilled artists made it all look so easy, Max tried to convince us he could easily master it and should have a go. He gave up before I had to point out that the guy he was watching was missing a finger, so maybe it isn't that easy.
It was another half hour up to Lindos, we stopped before the town to admire it from afar, tucked into a little cove of St Pauls Bay and extending all the way up to the Acropolis sitting above the town. A few seconds into town and the kids saw the donkeys that are the "Lindos Taxi." I didn't take much convincing, this had to be the easiest way to get them up the mountain. Max was up an on in a flash, Emerson took some encouragement, but a few seconds later they were both have a ball. I on the other hand didn't think the whole thing through very well. I now had to keep up with two donkeys who run up this mountain a hundred times a day, between the gradient, the rocky path way, the donkey droppings that coated the path and weight of the night before I was was b*****ed trying to keep up. Kids on the other hand were full of encouragement - "Dad this is soo cool, did you see the view? Dad, Dad, keep up!"
Eventually even the Donkeys can't go any further and it by foot into the Acropolis itself. Unrailed stair cases, and sheer marble slopes were a playground for Max and cardiac event for me. The Lindos people built this Acropolis to Athena in the 4th Century BC. This trip there are "so many old broken castles" as Emerson put it that I think the age of this stuff is finally starting to sink in a little, she at least has the concept of AD and BC. WIthout a guide in the Acropolis we mostly admired the spectacle of the site, and it's astounding vista out to that Aegean sea.
We had the same ass chasing fun on the way down the mountain and met Gab in the square. Gab had been strolling the alleys of the old town, no doubt there was never a plan for this place, but you couldn't have designed a better tourist trap to get lost in it's lanes.
Gab found a great palce for lunch that overlooked both Bay below, across to the village and up to the Acropolis, taking in all of Lindos from our table and lapping up that cooling sea breeze.
Back in the car this time we returned to Rhodes via the ritzy beach resort side of the island, this a beautiful summer island, the resort areas look divine and their sea views are breathtaking. All of the island we saw incomplete houses, the local all abandon these project during the summer because no matter what you do in winter, almost everyone on the island works in tourism during summer.
Back to the Old Town of Rhodes we strolled through the Plaka for a little while definitely priced for us tourists, everything was still cheaper than home. With such a lovely place you just want to sit and soak it up so we found a little restaurant where I found a Greek Weiss beer - Alpha. A few bottles of that and we set off to find some to take back the ship. So proud to have found Alpha in a local market I bought 17 cans of the stuff. I carried it all back to the ship, loaded it into the fridge and took one back with me as Gab, Emerson and I went off to have a swim in the bay near the boat. The water salinity is so high in this part of the world you float head clear of the water. Gab and Emerson worked on their shell collection while I floated around the bay - bliss!
I finally opened an Alpha only to discover I'd purchased 17 cans of their rather bland lager instead of their Weiss :(
