It's a grey morning making the carnival of getting everyone out of the room is even more challenging than it normally is. But Fid is busting to get out on the bikes so he takes on the challenge of motivating everyone himself. He inhales his breakfast then helps Boo with her pancakes too, very helpful brother.
We're off on the bikes and within minutes Fid has us circling the Tivoli a few times before he leads us almost directly back to yesterday's bakery, but the Danishes are all gone :( We're on to Rosenbourg castle, but there's no way to get the little man inside. Biking in this town is fantastic, dedicated lanes on almost all roads, cars are the second-class citizens of the road. We've crossed the town square a half a dozen times now, so I pitch the idea of visiting the Carlsberg brewery, and I pull a win!
We're clear in the wrong direction for Carlsberg so it takes us a while to find our way there. We approach from main the main "Elephant Gate" with the unpleasant Swastika on it's side. When the son Carl split off from his father's business Carl adopted the swastika as his symbol for his Ny Carlsberg brewery. Jacob and Carl continued in competition for many years until eventually, Jacob asked Carl to return to his business at which point they reunited both. In the tower above the entrance, there is a statue of Carl and Jacob looking down at everyone, commemorating their re-unification.
We arrive too late for the beer tasting and tour, but the bar is open with their whole selection, along with the aroma bar. Fid tours all the different aromas while I track down the Carlsberg Weissbier, never had it before but delicious! I'm halfway through the long neck when I get a call from Gab. She's managed to book me into Wisdomless Tattoo Club at 3pm - 45 minutes from now! We polish off the beer, scope out the tourist shop, then head home. Half way along we're caught in a pouring shower. Drenched we pull into the bike rental driveway with just 4 minutes to spare.
Fid and I scope the book and pick a design to use as a basis. My artist is a guy called Michelangelo. He spends the next hour re-interpreting the base design for me then it's time to get jabbed! I'm in the chair for nearly two hours, the Carlsberg slowly wearing off until I'm eventually well aware of each stroke. Not really painful, but still unpleasant. Before the shading starts, Alex the hostel manager comes down with espressos for both of us. Such a well-timed shot re-invigorates the process before it's eventual end. I'm jazzed with the art and can't wait to show it off - it'll be wrapped in glad wrap for the next week though.
Michelangelo is nearly finished when I realise we've got to be in Nyhavn for dinner in under an hour. Just like my last tattoo this one is cash only too, unlike my last 3am job in the Cross, Michelangelo trusted me to cross the street to the ATM without a bouncer following me.
We arrive at Nyhavn just as the area is kicking off for the night. We meet up with Mum & Dad and the Schweikerts already in the restaurant. It's herring and Aquavit tonight. Dinner is delicious, the kids are bouncing out of themselves to get on the cruise tomorrow, the aquavit is taking it's toll so we stroll Nyhavn for an hour to work it off before heading home. Tomorrow is the cruise, there is nothing more the kids want to hear about in Copenhagen, Mickey and Friends are all too close.
