Brenton Kovacs's Travels
20th
Today is a little on the cool side, but no rain. We spend the day exploring the Shibuya area and its very famous pedestrian crossing. Shauna is delighted to be able to finally see the statue of Hachiko, famous Japanese dog. We aimless wander the streets taking in the sights and sounds.

Our apartment in Tokyo is quite normal. It consists on bathroom, kitchen and bedroom/living room. Total space is about 12 square metres. You certainly cannot swing a cat in any of the rooms. You certainly cant spread out when unpacking as there is just no floor space. Maybe ok for 1 person but it is cramped with 2.

With such a nice sunny day happening we take a ride to the top of the government buildings in Shinjuku. It is free, but the views are not that good due to the hazy sky. Next we walk through the gardens in Shinjuku and Yoyogi. With the cherry blossoms blooming and a sunny day, the gardens are packed with tourists and locals enjoying the day. Walking the streets of Tokyo you never see and litter or cigarette buts anywhere. The place is so clean. Even the trucks are super quiet. Really nice place to walk.

We head off to Kamakura today. Its 60ks from Tokyo. Plenty of temples and gardens to see here. Such a beautiful little town with some really nice pedestrian only lane ways full of tiny little shops and cafes. Some offering samples of traditional japanese food, which we sample whenever we get the chance.
The bamboo garden is amazing, the largest type of bamboo grown. Such a wonderful quiet place. Next we venture down the road to the beach hoping to see Mt Fuji in the distance. But its doesnt matter how long we wait the clouds are not going to disappear. Oh well we tried.
For lunch we try the Japanese pancake called Okonomiyaki. It consists of a egg batter full of pork and vegetables. Very tasty. The place where we eat is a very small traditional cafe where the food is cooked at our table.
Now its staring to get a little cool, so we take the train back to Tokyo. By the time we reach our apartment the temperature has dropped to 7 degrees.

Opening the curtains reveals a glorious sunny day with a top of around 15 degrees. We are off to Akihabara, the electronics capital of Japan. Here we collect our wifi rental device for the next month. After having one at our last place, it would be hard to live without one while travelling Japan. We find some really cool little markets in Akihabara, and Shauna is at it again buying more Nike shoes. She is up to 3 pairs now in the last few weeks. As the nights are still very cold to cold we head back to our home before the sun sets.
25th
Another glorious day, with so much blue sky. Today we spend our time walking around Roppongi. Such a wealthy area of Tokyo, and so pristine and clean. We venture into the Honda Building to see Asimo the robot. He does a performance everyday, and there is a small crowd gathered. You get to see him walk, run and even hop on one leg. Pretty impressive when you are shown the development history of Asimo.
More walking back to our home while the sun is still out.

Nothing much on the planner for today. Just did lots of walking and Shauna did some shopping while i relaxed in the sunshine. What a great day. Really enjoyed Tokyo, even if it is chaotic when using the train or metro. We saw some funny sights, light a girl being trapped by the closing train door and having to be dragged out by the conductors as she tired to board a train that was full. Many times we witnessed trains that were well beyond their capacity. We were even in a train when we experienced the crush of the people boarding. Oh the joys of living in such a huge crowded city.
What we did like was walking the little back streets and lanes. So many little businesses of all types and many really old little homes that have not made way for the high rise buildings.
Tomorrow we are off to Nagano to see the Snow Monkeys and parts of the Japanese Alps which have had plenty of snow
