Wednesday 5th June
Early start - set off from Vis to Korcula at 6am
Korcula is quite a way south of Vis- and descriptions are poetic. Natural and cultural heritage, very big island with many villages, dense forests, beautiful beaches. Legend is it was discovered by Greek hero Antenor escaping from Troy. Marco Polo born here ( 13th century), amazing sword dances, and so many other festivals. Has been inhabited by Illyrian, Roman, Croatian, Venetian, Austro- Hungarian - so such a blend of so many cultures.
We stopped for a swim - for the crazies who dont mind the cold water- had lunch - and arrived in Korcula around 3pm. We then went on a guided our for an hour through the walled town which was very like the other towns - a maze of cobbled lanes. In Korcula the direction of the lanes was dictated by the direction of the winds during the different seasons - ensuring that the town was protected from storms in winter and received the cooling winds in summer. We did see a super luxury yacht moor while having coffee. Checked it out - it carries 12 guests - with around 20 staff - and can be hired for around $725000 per week - bargain! Another perfect day ending with a glorious sunset.
