Getting to Pangkor Island was pretty easy.
The coach ride from Penang was good and once we figured out where in the ferry terminal in Lumut to buy our ferry tickets from (clear directions are rare in Malaysia I am learning) it was about a 40minute ride to the Island.
Grabbing a taxi we went straight to the hotel we had booked and once we had insisted on seeing a few rooms (the first one was tiny, hot and not at all what we had seen on the Internet) we settled on a larger room with a decent bathroom and dumped our stuff there and gratefully grabbed a chilled drink.
As we had come here to specifically scuba we put our plan to book somewhere to dive tomorrow into action.....
I asked the lady at reception if she could help us book a dive and she said no one dives here as Pangkor isn't popular for that!
I did a double take...... "Pardon?! No one scuba dives on the whole Island......?!"
She kindly offered to make some calls for us (she didn't in the end) and we also did our own research and asked a number of watersports people on the beach by our hotel and a few local shop keepers.
Everyone's answer was the same - no scuba!
Bah to you silly websites that tell of diving in Pangkor. Bah to you Pangkor tourist people who write of the island being one of the best places on the west coast of Malaysia to enjoy scuba from.
Oh well, we are here for one day and it is a lovely island that was a small detour and on the way to Kuala Lumpur so tomorrow we will enjoy the sun, maybe do some other water activity and explore a bit.
I suggested to Rob that we hire mopeds and after asking at a few places we found a nice guy who rented us two automatic ones for £8 each for the day.
With a map in hand (well pocket) we headed off and rode around the whole island.
Winding roads, numerous beaches, gorgeous views and fun riding a moped.
We went back to town having driven past it on our first tour of the island and Tshirts in the shops taunted us with 'scuba dive in Pangkor' painted over them in numerous bright colours and designs!
Oh well, we had fun on the bikes at least.
Well that was until.......
Until I came off my moped whilst trying to turn it around to find a place to eat.
Wipe out!!
Realising I was going too fast to complete the 180, I went for the right break whilst pulling the left one but my brain didn't work fast enough to let go of the accelerator.
Ouch is all I can say. Ouch, ouch, OUCH!!!
Having pushed the bike off my ankle (no one came to help despite being close by) I got up and as Rob appeared I asked to go back to the hotel to clean up before we had dinner as my right arm and leg had taken the brunt of the fall and were covered in grit.
After taking care of the scrapes (hand, elbow, forearm, knees, calf and toe - the swollen ankle would come later - it hurt like billio when we used the antiseptic wipes!!) we grabbed some dinner and I went back to the room whilst Rob stayed out and chilled on the tree swing by the beach.
It's going to be an interesting night trying to sleep.
Nighty night!
