Happy New Year!
Today we changed hotel rooms for security and then went for lunch (you guessed it, Sri Malaya for their lunch time deal special.
Having done some research on the internet we decided to go to Pangkor Island which is on the west coast and about 4hrs from Penang so we could scuba dive.
The great news is there is a bus that goes from Butterworth (a ferry rode from Penang) to Lumut and another ferry ride to Pangkor Island.
So after lunch we caught a bus (it was not easy finding the right one and we got on and quickly off several buses before selecting the right bus) I the ferry station and then a ferry across to Butterworth.
We discovered that information shuts down on Sunday and it took a while to figure our where to walk to the catch the ferry and it was the same on the other side when trying to find the bus station (having followed the Internet direction and walking to the train station some 500metre away and up and down stairs we discovered had we simply turned left and walked ahead 50metres we would have found it much earlier!).
Now, it is becoming clear in Penang (and possibly Malaysia we may discover) that there is no order to queuing and it's every person for the themselves.
Queuing for the ferry you walk into a 'pen' and practically have to pub your way through once the gates are open to ensure you make the boat otherwise people will push past you in their bid to secure their departure.
This very apparent when the guy tried to shut the pen gate once the quota for the ferry was full and he had to push against at least 5 people on the other side who were still clamouring to squeeze through!
Having bought our tickets to Lumut we then mooched around town for a bit and I was cheeky and bought a mini flash drive for 21RM and asked the shop to transfer the photos from one of my memory cards onto it which they kindly did (the photo shop would have charged me 20RM for a disc!).
As it was our last night in Georgetown we took a rickshaw ride to see the town at dusk.
Georgetown really is beautiful and is well deserving of its UNESCO heritage status.
Chinatown, Little India, the Queen Victoria clock tower, the floating village and so many other wonderful places and buildings side by side in one old and gracious town.
After our ride (and it was a tight fit in this little rickshaw!) we had drink and said goodbye to Georgetown.
Goodbye Penang tonight and hello to Pangkor Island tomorrow!
