On Sunday and Monday we explored around the temples, travelling by tuk
tuk.
Having seen Angkor War by sunset on Saturday we wanted to go and see it in daylight on Monday and it was amazing how the light changed the building.
All in all we saw:
Sunday
Pre Rup
Banteay Srei (temple for women)
Mebon Temple
Ta Som
Neak Pean
South Gate to Angkor Wat
Monday
Bayon Temple (heads)
Baphon Temple
Phimeanakas Temple
The Temple of The Leper King
Thommanom Temple
Chau Say Thevada
Ta Kao (well I waited in the tuk tuk while Rob saw it!)
Na Phrom (Tomb Raider temple)
Banteay Kdei
Angkor Wat
The temples were truly amazing.
My favourites were Angkot Wat, Bayon (where they also have elephants outside to take you on a tour), Na Phrom and Bantay Srei
Angkor park where all the temples are is very well structured with many good roads and a very organised ticket booth (with photo tickets to stop sharing) at the main entrance and ticket checks at all the main temples.
Workers keep the place very clean and you can always see uniformed park attendants sweeping the leaves into huge piles.
At many of the temples are tourist police who look all stern and than ask of you want to buy a souvenir and offer you a part of their uniform!
We also went to the landline museum which was very moving.
It is run by a man who was recruited into the Khmer Rouge as a child and and laid approximately 5000 mines a month with them.
He later left to fight with the Vietnamese against the Khmer Rouge and then when the Vietnam army left Cambodia he started to clear mines to help his people.
The museum has a large collection of bombs, weapons and mines he collected over the years and he has also set up a school at the museum where poor or disabled children are educated, housed and loved to give them a better life.
Some of these children have written their biographies on a board and their stories were sad and hopeful.
I was very moved by the museum and it made me think about the children who sell things outside the temples etc and I promised myself to be more generous with both my money and my time when approached by them and any adults.
On Monday night over dinner we decided to do a pub crawl as there is a street here called Pub lane and it has loads of bars and restaurants and there are lots of alleyways too with some great places to eat and drink.
We hit 6 places in all and Rob walked me back from the X bar near our hotel at 2am (though the jaegar bomb kept me awake until 3am) and he wet back to the bar, retuning around 5am.
Siem Reap and Angkor Park with all it's temples truly is a wonderful place and I would be happy to return here.
On Weds 21st Dec we have arranged to be picked up at 6am for the fast bus (transit van) to Bangkok. - we opted for stupid o'clock to save 3/4 hours on the journey by coach. - fingers crossed its a good ride!
Thanks for the wonderful sites Angkor Park, you were great!
