Today was a day of travelling from Phnom Penh to Batambang by bus.
The roads were good though the journey took 6.5hours and the air con above our seats wasn't working and it appears we were the only seats with. I window curtain either!
That said, we arrived a little weary and definitely hot, safely in Batambang around 17:00
We passed a LDS church a few minutes before the market place in Batambang. The first LDS church we have seen since starting our travels.
The architecture of the church is very LDS and I could tell it was a Mormon church before I saw the sign.
Once the bus pulled up, as is usual we have found in Cambodia, a number of tuk tuk drivers all vied to take us to hotels showing signs and leaflets of the rooms and prices.
We chose a guy and settled on the Royal Hotel which has good reviews in The Lonely Planet.
It is an ok hotel and is pleasant enough.
After chilling and freshening up we went or a little walk around town and ate at the Gecko cafe.
It is a great little place to eat with a varied menu with monies going to employ and support the staff who are all there to learn skills and put themselves through school and/or provide for their families.
With the menu you receive a list of all the servers and kitchen staff with a little bio on each person and a small card with your servers name on and the names of the people preparing your meal.
It is a great way to connect with the people there and you can go seethe kitchen where they prepare your food and thank the staff.
We highly recommend the place of ever you are in town.
Tomorrow we have hired the same tuk tuk driver (Nith) to take us on a tour of the main highlights of Batambang and have a 9am start.
I'm looking forward to the Bamboo train (I will explain about this tomorrow!).
Goodbye Phnom Penh, hello Batambang!
