Deb & Ju's Travels
Hi All,
Since our last update..........
We met Cliff, Kirsty and Olivia on Sunday night for a drink and we went to a bar called -5. Need we explain further..... the whole bar (except the floor and ceilings) was made of ice, even the glasses. When you go in they supply you with big padded coats with fur hoods, fur boots and gloves. You are only allowed to stay half an hour and beleive us, thats all you needed. We sipped on a Vodka cocktail and listened to some music and then headed out of there to warm up! We went for a couple more beers and then headed home to ring our mummies.
On Monday we tried to book a helicopter flight to fly over Milford Sound and the mountains but they weren't flying as it was snowing over there, although it was quite nice in Queenstown. Instead we decided to go up on the gondola (we call them cable cars) up the mountain. Once up there Deb decided she was feeling brave and did a bungy jump!(No she hasn't met the man of her dreams!) It was called the ledge and it was slightly different from the normal bungy as you weren't tied by your ankles. You wore a harness and you could just run and jump off. It was fantastic but very scary and I said a few words a shouldn't have (Sorry mum!). We then got given tickets for the Luge which is basically a little racing kart and you can race down the top of the mountain. Only lasted a few minutes but was good fun. We then came back down the mountain in the gondola. (We decided againt the paragliding!) After all that action we were quite peckish so went for dinner in a restaurant called Prime which overlooked the Wharf and was very nice. Decided to get an early night and headed back to watch a film and get some sleep.
On Tuesday we left Queenstown and headed to Franz Josef via Arrowtown, Wanaka and the Fox Glacier. We stopped at Puzzling Town which was good fun and we bought some Rubiks cubes to keep us amused when we're not driving. We have both messed them up and can't get them back to how they should be! We arrived at Franz Josef, booked into our accomodation and booked our Glacier walk for the next day. We were quite tired from driving so just grabbed some dinner in the local pub (and had apple and Blackberry crumble, umm) and had an early night.
Wednesday was an early start and we got all the gear needed for Glacier walking and headed off on our bus to the base of the glacier. It was a 2.5km walk to the base and then we had to climb up loads of rocks just to get onto the glacier. Once on the glacier we had to put on our talonz and hike up the ice. Watching the tour guides hack the steps out in front of you was very interetsing! The weather held our until our descent and then the rain started again. It was getting quite cold then so was nice to know we were on our way back down. We were on the glacier for about 2 hours in total and then we had the climb back down the rocks and the 2.5 km walk back to the bus. Didn't do much when we got back, grabbed some lunch, had a hot shower and did some washing (we miss you mumsy!). We were knackered from all that walking so later we just had dinner and went to bed. All these early nights, I don't know whats wrong with us!
On Thursday we left Franz Josef and headed for a town called Greymouth. Its meant to be the biggest town on the West Coast. We got there just in time for lunch and then headed to the internet cafe to update the web site. Just as we logged on the power went and someone shouted "TORNADO"! We ran to the window and we saw the tornado ripping through the town. It was quite scary but was gone within minutes. As the power had gone we decided there was no point hanging around and as we drove our of the town we saw some of the damage it had caused and it was quite scary. We were quite lucky that we were on the other side of town. We watched the news later and the total damage was very scary. No one died which was amazing. After all the excitement we drove on to a town called Westport. Again, (we are getting boring now!) we didn't do much except eat and go to bed!
This morning we got up and decided to head to Nelson. We are meeting Stuart tonight who is a guy we met in Fraser Island and who helped us celebrate Ju's birthday. We are staying here 2 nights although apparently a big rugby game tomorrow so we had to stay just out of town in a place called Richmond. Have only made it to the internet cafe but will let you know what its like in the next update.
Sorry still no piccies but they will be on soon, promise!
Lots of Love Deb & Ju x x
