Bikepacker's South American Adventure
Nov 19
Saturday is market day in Otavalo so off I go. Traffic was brutal getting out of the city, thanks to construct and an overturned truck. It was interesting to see lots of people walking along the highway. Many catholics do this pilgrimage every year. The main road will close this evening as most people walk along through the night.
The highways have improved immensely in the past 20 years. They have big wide shoulders and there were several groups of cyclists riding these mountains. They have some strong legs! I love that they built highways with other users in mind.
The market was interesting but definitely more touristy than it used to be. Still, it was fun to see all the stuff and to haggle bit. We also stopped the animal market, which is not for the faint of heart. Let's just say that being a pig here would not be very fun. We also went to the leather market which was really just a street full of leather shops. Not that interesting, but I did spot a great decoration in a parking spot?
They also sold what look like hot dogs, but are really unripe bananas grilled, then filled with cheese. Ugh! Couldn't do it.
All in all it was a pretty good day, but more touristy than I am used to. Perfect for a day where I am feeling under the weather.

Cheryl Duckworth I know you & bananas - good thing you inquired more before purchasing one! Hope your feeling under the weather is a fleeting thing :)
