I had to catch the 6.30am bus from 1770 which got me to Rainbow Beach from 12.30pm. I checked in and headed to our Fraser Island meeting in the hostel. I met all the members of our group, watched a safety video and we went through what we needed.
After the meeting I went on a free walk which was run by the hostel with some of the girls from my room. It was a steep climb through some residential properties before we arrived at the Carlo Sand Blow, but the walk was worth it as it was amazing. The guy from the hostel talked about the history of the area before showing us how to sand board down the sand dunes. I gave it a go and managed to make it most of the way down the dune before I went flying off and got a mouth full of sand, but it was good fun. We then walked to the edge to watch the sunset and take some photos jumping in front of the sun and holding it. Once the sun had set we headed back to the hostel, had a stable backpacker dinner of noodles, my last hot shower for a few days and packed a small bag to take to Fraser Island.
It was an early start. We all met in the bar and checked our food, camping equipment and the jeeps, before loading up the trailer and setting off. There were 14 of us in our group and our guide Jimmy, I was in Jimmy's car. After a short journey from the hostel we reached the beach where we caught a 10 minute ferry to Fraser Island. When we arrived the tide was quite high so we could only drive on the beach for a bit before having to take an inland track. We drove for some time to find a suitable campsite and we set up camp next to the beach, just behind the sand dunes to protect us from the wind. We all set up our tents and then helped to set up the main cooking/eating/hang out area. After a quick bite to eat we drove to Lake Wabby, we walked for 30 minutes and reached some massive sand dunes which led down to the freshwater lake. The weather was lovely so when we reached the lake we set our towels out and chilled in the sunshine for an hour. When I woke up from my nap it was so peacefull that I thought everyone had left, but it turned out that after the early start most of us had fallen asleep. We walked back towards the beach and the jeeps and drove back to camp. After a lovely cold cider we made dinner, a chicken stir fry and then we sat round the camp fire chatting and having a few drinks. Our tour leader also made us some rum cocktails before he proceeded to drink and get really drunk and ramble on about anything or everything. First night camping and I didnt sleep great, the sleeping mat was so thin you could feel every bump in the ground and it was really cold.
We got up early the next morning to watch the sun rise and then headed back to bed for a bit. We made scrambled and boiled eggs and toast for breakfast and then left camp for the day. The tide was quite high and we were being chased by waves as we drove down the beach, we ended up having to drive at some speed to get away from them, before taking an inland track when it became impossible to drive on the beach. Our first stop was Eli Creek, we walked along the board walk and got into the creek and walked the length of it back towards the sea. The water was not too cold and it was so clear you could see all the fish. After we dried off a bit we headed further up the coast and came across a dead turtle and a couple of dead whales that had been washed up onto the beach. We reached the Pinicles, had a few photos and set off to find a picnic area to have lunch at. After lunch we drove further up the coast to the Champage Rock Pools, we walked down to them and sat on the edge watching all the big waves come in. It had started to get a bit cooler so I whimped out and didnt get in the water. We then drove back down the coast to Indian Head, Jimmy told us about the history of this site and then we climbed up to the top. It was so cold and windy at the top but there were such amazing view of the coastline and the inland sand dunes. After the climb down we drove to the ship wreck to take a quick photo, but the weather had turned pants and it was too cold to be out of the jeep for long. By the time we got back to camp we were so cold, we set up the campfire, put layers on and warmed up for a bit. Dinner was yummy and included steak cooked on top of the camp fire. After dinner we sat and chatted, drank and looked at the stars, the sky was so clear, I dont think I have ever seen stars like it! Laura, Anna and I ventured to the make shift toilet and could hear something when we came out, we put the torch on and realised it was a dingo, who was staring at right at us and we ran screaming back to the camp, not following any of the information given to us before we came here. None of us slept very well that night as we all had an over active imagination and thought the dingo's were hanging around our camp.
It was another early start so we could have breakfast, pack up camp and set off for our last day. Our first stop was Central Station, an area in the centre of the island, surrounded by rainforest. Jimmy talked to us about the history and then we set off for a walk through the rainforest. After our walk we headed to Lake McKenzie, we all sat on the sand and chilled out for a bit taking in the view. It was windy and quite cold so most of us whimped out and did not go in the water, but the sun did come out for our last 5 minutes so at least we could get a couple of nice photos. We headed back to the resort on the island for some lunch before getting the ferry back to the mainland. Back at the hostel we had to clean out the jeeps and wash all the equipment before it was finally time to have a much needed hot shower and find some clean clothes.
In the evening I met up with Amisha for a drink as she had arrived at the hostel and then headed out to dinner with my group from Fraser Island. We went to a pizza place where it was BYO so we could take all our left over alcohol to finish it off. Our tour guide got quite drunk (nothing new there) so we decided to leave and head back to the hostel for a few drinks at the bar before saying our goodbyes, as we all had early starts in the morning.
