The overnight bus from Airlie Beach to 1770 seemed to take forever, it was freezing and for the majority of the journey it was wet and windy! I did not sleep well at all.
The hostel picked me up from the Greyhound stop and took me to the hostel. It is a little bit out of town but had a really nice atmosphere and all the rooms had no keys (at least I did not have to worry about loosing my key). There were no nearby shops and I did not have much food on me so a girl called Phillipa at the hostel made me some pasta so I would not go hungry! I was meant to do my Scooteroo trip but because of the bad weather it was cancelled so I headed into town with Phillipa and we went and had a couple of drinks at the local tavern (which was just full of old men), before heading back to the hostel and getting a much needed early night.
The following day the weather had finally improved and I spent the morning chilling out on the beach. In the afternoon I finally got to do my Scootero tour. We were given leather jackets and a helmet and a quick lesson before doing a few practice laps. It took me a little while to get the hang of it as I kept taking my foot off the break, so they made me go round a few more times until I got the hang of it. When everyone was finally ready we headed out onto the road. Once we got going a found it a lot easier and I started to really enjoy it. We rode for a couple of hours around Agnes Water and 1770 and even managed to spot a few kangaroo's in the wild, before stopping in 1770 by the sea to eat potato wedges and watch the sunset before heading back on the bikes.
The next morning I woke up early and packed a small bag to take on my castaway trip (taken to an island and left for 24 hours). I brought some supplies in town including food, alcohol and toilet tissue and went and met the other members of my group that I would be spending the next 24 hours with. There were 5 of us in total, me and 4 lads, but unfortunately they all were 18/19 and none of them attractive - just my luck! We waited for the pilot and he took us in 2 groups to the airfiled as the plane only held a maximum of 4 people. I was in the first group with 2 others and the pilot Bruce decided to do acrobatics with the plane, tipping it from side to side, up and down, which was great fun and we also got to enjoy some amazing views. We landed on the beach and walked to our camp for the night. Luckily in the 2nd plane was a camp supervisor cally Sylvie, she was of a similar age to me and it was so nice to have some other female company. When we had all arrived, picked our tents for the night and stored our food so the bush turkeys would not get it we all walked to the lighthouse (which took about 45 minutes) and then carried onto the far beach and the caves. After our walk we headed back to the camp, made some lunch and sat on the beach enjoying a rum and coke - perfect! In the evening we cooked dinner (beef stew) and sat around the camp fire having a few drinks and playing drinking games. We went and sat on the beach, it was so black and quiet with only the light from the lighthouse breaking up the sky, it felt so strange being the only ones on the island.
I had set my alarm so I could get up and watch the sunrise, but when it went off I could hear that it was pouring with rain so turned my alarm off and went back to sleep. We got up and cleaned the camp up and had some breakfast and before we knew it Bruce was back to pick us up. He flew us back to the airfield and on the way he decided to turn the plane engine off and let the plane nose dive towards the sea and making the plane go up and down so that gravity was making our belongings float in the plane. When we reached town I headed back to the hostel and met Misha, as she had arrived while I had been away. After a much needed hot shower we headed into town with Jenny to get some food. In the evening Jenny, Misha and I sat and had dinner and a few drinks in the hostel. The temperature had dropped and we ended up sitting in front of the fire to warm up, before heading to bed.
