So we got picked up from Chiang Mai in a 12 seater minivan. Me and Matt got the best seats in the house next to the driver. We had to keep swapping seats every time we stopped as one of us was sat above the engine so your bum was on fire. The journey to Chiang Khong was about 5 hours in total. We did some cool stop offs though, one was at a hot spring which we visited last time on our way to Chiang Rai and then we stopped at this amazing temple it was bright white with glass tiles all over it. So beautiful definitely the pretties one I have seen, so make sure that you check out the pictures.
We got to our accommodation for the night which was a guesthouse on the MeKhong overlooking Laos, fortunately it was included in what we had paid which was a brucey bonus along with the free dinner. However it was a proper dive. Cold shower, rubbish fan and lots of lizards. Oh well, it was free and the view was pretty nice.
We went to the bar and started chatting to a few people from our bus, there were two twins from Cambridge called Sarah and Chloe and a guy called Guy who is from Amsterdam. The free dinner was amazing, we had this lush spring onion and cucumber soup and fried rice with an egg on top. Honestly, I think they are obsessed with eggs over here as they put them on everything. Matt managed to chuck his soup all over me as a moth hit the fan and smacked him in the chest, he was pretty shocked so jumped up and chucked his soup all over me and the table. It was so funny and he was gutted he didn't get to eat the soup. After dinner Guy, the twins and us played a card game 'Bulls***' with four Irish girls who are also from our bus. Matt and I had a fairly early one though as our wakeup call was at 7am. Unfortunately we got very little sleep as the shutters on our windows were broken so we had loads of Lizards in our room and every time you turned the light off they went mental, so we had to sleep with the light on all night and wrapped up like a mummy in our sleeping bag liners.
Morning came and after very little sleep we weren't in the best of moods, however a free breakfast cheered us up and for a change it was egg. Lol, yummy though so can't complain. The Border crossing was really straight forward we got a bus to a little river crossing where you got a speedboat across to Laos you then had to pass your forms over and wait for it to be processed which took about 5 minutes then you paid $35. Overall it was simple and we were pleased. Our next stop was the ATM where we drew out 1 million Kip (about £80) we were loving it though as it may be the only time in our lives that we are millionaires. It is rather frustrating though as that is the most you can take out in one transaction. Next journey was our two day slow boat with an overnight stop in Pak Beng, so read the next blog to find out how that went.
