Friday 30th November
So today we were back on the road...well boat, but you get my drift. As usual on a day of travelling there was a lot of hanging about not really knowing what's going on but after a tuk tuk, ferrry, bus, minibus & another tuk tuk we finally arrived at Krabi Town around 6pm. The 9 hour journey actually felt pretty short as well. Once we arrived in Krabi Town we headed straight to Ao Nang Beach, to find some accommodation. Our plan was to wing it, but this doesn't appear to be the best idea now it is high Season in Thailand, everywhere is booked up and the places that aren't are pretty expensive. After an hour of looking we found some Bungalows which are a ten minute walk from the beach, they were the best we had seen for the money. Still around £12 a night, which isn't cheap compared to everywhere else we have been, especially for a fan room. We dumped our stuff and crashed. Pretty dull day, but I am now on the third book of the Game of Thrones and loving it so that kept me entertained through all of the travelling.
Saturday 1st December
Yay, sunshine...finally! We both woke up feeling super happy knowing the sun was out and we were near a beach, plus it was pretty exciting as we have never been to the west of Thailand before. We decided to check out Ao Nang beach, it is nice especially with the limestone mountain backdrop. The only thing that lets it down is the amount of tourists, it's pretty crazy. We never thought it would be this busy even in High Season. We spent a few hours on the beach just chilling and enjoying the scenery, Matt was gutted as both of his swim shorts were being washed so he couldn't go in the sea. We then headed up the main street to find out about Phi Phi and Koh Lanta and book some tours. We had done some research the night before on Phi Phi and basically ruled it out as the accommodation is too expensive for us at the moment, but we decided to do a one day tour so booked that for the following day. We also booked transport to Koh Lanta for Monday, we found a nice guesthouse as well so have booked that for 5 nights. We've only heard good things about it, so fingers crossed its nice.
In the afternoon we got a long tail boat across to Railay beach which is stunning. We just wish we had come in low season when everywhere is a bit quieter. As Matt couldn't swim, we went for a bit of an explore. So we walked across to Phragnan beach, it was a nice walk and we passed under loads of caves and past Mangroves. I went for a swim, while Matt read a book on the beach. On the way back we were tempted to do the View Point but it was literally a rope going up a mountain and it looked really muddy. As I am now on my last pair of flip flops, we didn't think it would be wise. Still gutted that someone stole my flip flops in Cambodia, who steals a shoe! We walked back round to Railay beach and had a beautiful spicy Papaya salad overlooking the sea. Yum. We then caught the boat back to Ao Nang.
In the evening we really fancied a curry and they have a lot of them here so I was a little bit excited, sad I know, but I do love a good curry. We just couldn't get over how expensive they all were, it was £5 minimum just for a curry without rice or a naan bread. That's like English prices, it's crazy! We thought it was a bit too steep for Thailand so refused to have one. We got a few beers at a bar before Matt decided he fancied a 7/11 Toastie, so we headed back via the 7/11 with two Ham and Cheese Toasties, some crisps and a chocolate bar each. Very Healthy! I suppose it makes up for the salad at lunch.
Sunday 2nd December
Today was our speed Boat tour of Koh Phi Phi, we were both looking forward to a good snorkel and checking out some nice beaches. As usual our pick-up didn't arrive until 9.20am when the boat was suppose to leave at 9am, there were loads of people waiting for us on the boat so god knows how long they had been waiting. Probably not as long as the hour we had been waiting for. The speedboat was pretty big, capacity of about 50 and it had 3 engines, totalling 750bhp (Matt told me that in case you boys are wondering how I knew). First stop was Bamboo Island, it is beautiful just lush white sand and turquoise water, we were suppose to snorkel here but as it was pretty choppy so you couldn't really see many fish. After a quick swim and sunbathe it was back on the boat. Next we headed to Viking Cave to take some pictures. I'm not going to lie, it was just a cave which looked like it was being held up with bamboo scaffolding. We carried on to Pileh Bay for some more sightseeing and photo opportunities. It is all very pretty, there are just so many boats doing the same thing that you all get in each other's way.
We then stopped at Maya Bay, which is where the film 'The Beach' was filmed. Now the amount of tourists here was unbelievable, honestly check out the pictures, it's crazy. We could barely find anywhere to sit. We spend 40 minutes here, mainly laughing at everyone posing for pictures. Honestly, some people do the craziest photo poses, one girl was on all fours in the sea trying to look sexy and got smashed by a wave. Very funny, you had to laugh. After this we went to Phi Phi Don Island for lunch, it was a buffet and wasn't bad considering they were catering for around 1,000 tourists. We ate then headed to a bar to enjoy the view overlooking the boats and bay. In the afternoon we had two stops to do some snorkelling, it was really good. We saw a lot of different fish like clownfish, parrot fish, wrasse and many others. After our final snorkel everyone was pretty knackered, we tucked into some fresh pineapple and watermelon then headed back to Ao Nang, literally everyone on the boat was asleep apart from Matt.
Tonight we are just going to grab some dinner and watch the football. Then we have our transfer to Koh Lanta in the morning. We can't wait, just hoping that it won't be as busy as Phi Phi was today.
We will speak to you all soon on Skype over the next few days. Lots of love Carly & Matt x x x
