Very differnt from Phi Phi - MUCH bigger for a start, with most of the resorts only on one side of the island. It was also MUCH quieter than Phi Phi. The place felt almost deserted - bars and restaurants were empty and as there was no real main town (at least not anywhere near where we were staying), we ended up staying at our resort most evenings. Our resort was OK - a swimming pool, bungalows right on the beach etc - but we were surrounded by Swedish people!! (Apart from 2 very lovely-looking girls - who were in with a group of English guys (so we missed out there) - the rest were either couples or families! Needless to say, our Christmas here was very quiet. Which was nice to be honest. At least our friend Anne, who we first met in China, joined us for a few days over Christmas.
Speaking of Christmas - my Christmas Eve was spent in bed suffering from food poisoning! Not good. This also meant that I missed out on the Christmas celebrations put on by the resort because (for some reason) the Thai's 'celebrate' on the 24th and not the 25th!!
Christmas Day was spent zooming about on scooters exploring a bit of the island. My Christmas lunch consisted of a plate of fruit as that was all I could manage!!!! (I think that this was also the first Christmas in a LONG time where I haven't drunk alcohol!! It felt very strange)!!
As nice as Koh Lanta is - lots of sandy beaches (better than Phi Phi), very laid-back and (so far) reasonably undeveloped - I won't be rushing back here. At least not while I'm single!!
Oh, I nearly forgot to mention our elephant trek. I was a little dubious beforehand (my last experience of elephant trekking was also the last time I was in Thailand and they didn't look as though they were looked after very well), but thankfully the elephants looked in good health and the handlers only used vocal commands (rather than sticks) to 'steer' them. I say 'steer' because lets be honest, if an elephant wants to do something, who is going to argue!!!
