Ben and Marie's American Road Trip
Today we got up early and ready as we were heading into Washington DC on a shuttle run by the campsite. Setting off at 9 and coming back at 5 would mean we had the whole day in DC. There was plenty to do there anyway on the main Mall, which is essentially a long road, or a promenade in pretentious language. We arrived and decided we would go as far away from the pickup point first, so that we ended up back where we needed to be on time. So it was the botanical gardens we went to first, which was a really fresh experience for us. We had never been to one before, and arguably it is just a big greenhouse but there were some fascinating plants in there, and the air was so clean. The orchid room was really cool, and there was a room dedicated to plants that could kill you, and even a Jurassic zone. It was really well set out. They even had an elevated path to walk through the tropical zone. It's not usually what I would class as my cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it, and I guess it's all about trying new things. After that we got some frozen yoghurt, I had cookies and cream and chocolate chips and little miss sweetness and light had kiwi and granola. Ladee-da. But no, they were really nice, and we are those on the way to the Lincoln Memorial. Which was a long walk as it was, but we stopped at the Washington Monument and sat beside it for a while, resting after the walk. After all, it was around 28 degrees. The hottest day in DC for 29 odd years or something ridiculous as they said on the radio. Then we walked on to the World War 2 Memorial, and the quotes and the star wall representing all the lives lost were genuinely touching. The fountain in the centre a fitting tribute to the men and women who gave and lost their lives to the war. After spending a moment sitting by the fountain and reading the quotes, we moved on to the walk to the Lincoln Memorial, where you walk alongside a long reflecting pool on the way. The Memorial was huge and the etchings either side told a story, mainly about the people who made America great. We took out photos, and some for other people, and then moved on, next stop the White House. We had already acquired a map at the start of the day, so all was well on the navigating front. That was down to me however, obviously. We saw the White House from both sides and walked to Five Guys in between for late afternoon lunch. We were suitably knackered by now and after marching back to main Mall after seeing the White House, we went to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. We had a look at spacecraft over the years and at the first land to air missile amongst other things, before heading back to the capitol building to take some photos before leaving. It was when we were back on the shuttle that we found out we were both unsurprisingly sunburnt. So sore and weary, we went back to the KOA for a good nights rest, we set the tent up and went to bed.
