Ben and Marie's American Road Trip
Today was quite a big drive, and we were headed back into Texas, but this time it was going to be along Route 66. So we were set out for Amarillo, and more importantly, the Big Texan Steak Ranch. If there is anything that sounds more masculine than that, I will be pretty impressed. It's basically a hotel and restaurant complex that has a 72 oz steak challenge and has been running for over 50 years. It's a Route 66 founding father if ever there was one, we were really excited, and not just for the food. We had a good chunk of Route 66 landmarks on the 250 odd mile drive to look forward to as well, so we set off early. We kept on Route 66 the whole way, driving alongside the interstate for most of it, and chopping and changing between the north and south frontage roads. We stopped for a photo at the Texas state line, and took photos of the last diner in Oklahoma. We went through some little towns in Texas including one that boasts the largest cross in the northern hemisphere. We also went through a little town called Shamrock in which a Conoco gas station and diner was situated that was the inspiration for Flo's V8 Cafe in Cars. Automatically I was thrilled by that prospect, it had so much Cars merchandise that I had to hold back, but it also had a booth that Elvis had sat and eaten in. I signed their guest book, and then we were on our way again. We got the ranch at around 4 o clock and checked into our saloon style room. It looked like Woody from Toy Story's room, if he had one. Horses on the bed sheets, Indian murals on the wall and the bathroom door was actually a saloon door. The amount of times I walked through those swinging doors in one evening was ridiculous. That evening we headed over to the steak ranch for dinner, obviously. We started with a home brewed beer for me, and Marie had a proper margherita and then we got some mozzarella sticks to start, which would later become rather unnecessary. We got our mains, Marie had an 8 oz sirloin and I had a 16 oz pandhandle cut steak. Marie asked for hers well done bless her and I think that's a hangable offence in Texas. I asked for medium/well, they both came, and mine was massive, biggest steak I'd ever had, and it turned out the be the best steak I've ever had. It came with a creamy sour cream style horseradish which was amazing. I had steak fries and chilli on the side. After I'd eaten it all, I was fit to burst, I'm pretty sure I ruptured something. We stayed a while longer and chatted to our waiter who was a lovely guy. He had recently lost 30 lbs in a few weeks, and I asked him for tips because I think I will need them after America. Then I had another vodka and we left to crawl back to our room. It took me about 4 seconds to pass out from exhaustion on my bed.
