Today we got a 6 hour bus to Phnom Penh in Cambodia… which we were very excited about as we have heard good things about this country. Apparently the people are a lot friendlier and have a completely different attitude towards tourists than Vietnam.
Just before we got to the border we gave the bus conductor $25 US Dollars ( for our visa ) and our passports… he then hopped on a moped and sped off ahead of us. When we arrived at the boarder everyone just stands there…. No queue… and they call out your name and give you back your passport with the Visa already glued to a page. You then get back on the bus, drive a little bit further to passport control. Here you give them the passport, they check the visa, take your fingerprints and check your face matches the passport photo with a camera….didn't expect it to be so hi-tech! Then back on the bus to a quick drive-on ferry across a river. The roads are very bumpy in Cambodia… mainly just like dirt tracks… with only 3 or 4 main highways in the whole country.
We arrived in Phnom Penh at around 1pm and as soon as we got off the bus a Tuk Tuk driver called DJ Camara came over to us ( there are thousands of these in Cambodia ). He was a nice bloke and said he will be our driver for the whole time we were here. To get an idea of price we asked how much it would be to take us to our hostel which was a few miles away… he said $3 which we thought was fine. They work in US Dollars here… or Cambodian Rial - $1 is 4000 Rial.
Our hostel was called Mad Monkey, which we had been recommended and the staff were really friendly straight away, as usual. We checked ourselves in to the Orangutan Dorm and got ourselves sorted whilst DJ Camara waited outside. We went and told him we were hungry and asked him to take us somewhere nice… so he drove us to a nice BBQ chicken restaurant. We ate while he waited for us again. Then he took us back to the hostel so we could decide what we wanted to do whilst in Phnom Penh.
We knew that we wanted to visit the Killing Fields whilst here, which is the main thing to do and organised with DJ to pick us up at 11am to go there. We offered to pay him for today… but he said "I trust you, you trust me… we will sort it out tomorrow". We then went for a beer in the rooftop bar in the hostel, which was free because we had just arrived. Here we bumped into the three girls and another guy we met in Nha Trang, Vietnam. Also made friends with another few girls and guys and had a couple drinks with them. Then we had dinner and got ready to go out that night.
The night started in the rooftop bar where all the travellers were and we watched the Chelsea game which was on too. Then it moved onto a bar down the road called Top Banana, which was also on a rooftop. We spent the night here, and the Liverpool game was on too before going back to bed before The Killing Fields tomorrow…
