Leaving Rome early, we head to Naples to catch a ferry to the island of Capri! As the south is the actual home of the mafia, we had to bride the dock guards with bottles of water to board our ferry. Apparently this was quite an easy transaction as they usually climb on the check out the girls, and take any soft drinks/food they can see. Quite amusing. We have a beautiful 45mim cruise across, viewing all the islands rising out of the clouds, making us very excited for our Greek Isle cruise! We dock at the beyond picturesque sea side town. Clear, clear blue green waters of the Mediterranean are beyond words! We immediately find a boat to take us to the Blue Grotto, and have fun haggling down the price to $10 euros...saving a checks 2.50 cents haha! We hug the cliffs and gaze up at the very expensive looking villas atop. Starting to turn a nice shade of pink, we arrive at the cave front, and loiter with another 7 or so boast, trying to coax the cave rowers to collect us first! They finally come over and we do a scary jump into the tiny row boats in which you've got to sit on the floor. We then pay a government fee and approach the cave. Finger and toes carefully inside, head ducked and fully laying down, we enter a frighteningly dark sea tunnel they seemed to last far to long! We are told to sit up and we can't see anything and wondering if we have actually arrive, we turn around and gasp. The small amount of sunlight that makes it down the passage, reflects of the water and cave walls, making it glow a bright fluorescent aqua. We are then persuaded by our boat man to dive in (for a generous 5euro tip each) but we do, and it was amazing. The water was so clear and fresh, and it was magical swimming in the cave, as long as you could suppress the fear haha. I have to say, swimming in a 20 meters deep and in a 99% dark cave under a cliff is quite an experience. We clamber back into the boat with difficulty and learn that it was originally used by the emperor Titus as his personal swimming hole. He built a summer palace near by and had a personal tunnel made. Back on the island we had a quick bit to eat, nothing special, then laid on the lovely (but stoney) beach for the remaining 45mins we had on the island. We then caught another ferry to Sorrento, which is also uhmazing! Massive cliffs with elevators that take you up down to the beaches for 1 euro. Slightly burnt and tiered Levi meets us with the coach and takes us to an excitedly dodgy little hotel with stunning views. A quick freshen up and we brave the teeny roads up to a mountain restaurant with para manic views of the ocean. Another averagish Italian meal and we spend the rest of the night in the bar next door to the hotel chatting happily with Liz and Levi:)
