Good-bye to Paris this morning and on our way to Normandy and Mont St Michel. Caught the TGV, very fast, train to Rennes to pick up our hire car. Got picked up at Montparnasse railway station by some very pissed French men on their way home after the rugby. This train does go very fast, 300kmh. 2 hours later and we were in Rennes, went to McDonalds and continued on after finally sorting out our accommodation, bit of confusion there. Michelle drove, thank god. About an hour later we turned a corner on the road and there was Mont St Michel, the most amazing sight I have ever seen. We settled into our room and then went off to explore. Amazing doesn't do it justice. There really are no words to describe this place. How they built it so many centuries ago and it still remains in perfect condition is astounding. As the crowds died down we were able to explore it even better. Climbing stairs and more stairs, buns of steel, the view from the ramparts were superb. We watched the sun set after dinner. It is built on a pyramid shaped granite rock island. When I say island it isn't an island all the time as the tide only comes in once a month. The water is so far out you cant even see it. Just big sand/mud/quicksand flats. We walked out quite a way and got covered in sticky grey sand/mud. Matt thought it was great. Climb more stairs and off to bed…
