Kroombit Cattle Station
I had been looking forward to this day and I was not left disappointed! It was more fun than I'd imagined it would be and this was definitely my favourite day in Australia.
We arrived to be greeted by Jonathan the head cowboy with a 'how the f*** are ya?' to which we all screamed 'yeeeeehah!'. First thing we did was sit down to a steak lunch, no messing, huge slab of meat - heaven! Jonathan talked us through the day while we ate & then we had a couple of minutes to get changed for our first activity. We all bought a bandana & cowboy hat to fit in & headed off to the horse stables. Me, Jane, Dan & Logan were all riding horses along with Danielle & another fella. We all got given a horse:
Dan: Grace (hilariously moody horse that gave Dan crap)
Logan: Dolly (a big black beauty)
Jane: Alfonso (gorgeous horse rocking the same tan as me, white & covered in freckles)
Me: Bonny (lovely brown horse, but was a hungry moo & kept stopping to eat all the time)
We got a quick horse riding tip or 2 & then we were off to do our job. We had to head into the fields & get behind all the goats & muster them into their pen. It was amazing. Took a couple hours, but we all loved it. Had to shout 'Hey Up Up Up' at the goats to get them shifting. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
After the goat muster we were straight off to the goat rodeo to do our next activity. First thing we did was shooting. Me, Logan & Dan bought a beer and some bullets (amazing) & one by one we stepped up to learn to shoot the gun and fire at clays. I missed all of them except my last shot! Thank God cause the penalty for missing them all was a naked run down the field!
We then learnt how to Lasso. I shall be using this skill in the future for sure! Next thing I knew we were split into groups of 3 and shoved in a pen full of goats. We had to pull 3 Billy goats (males) out of the pen by the horns into another pen. Me, Jane & Dan were up first in our team named 'rope the baaaaaaastards'. We were second fastest losing out to Logan, Danielle & Mandy who called their team 'goat f*** yourself'. They then got to do more challenges with the goats & it was hilarious to watch. Was so much fun. It wasn't bloody easy I'll tell you that for free.
We then got about 6 minutes to shower for dinner. Yeeeeeah...like that was gonna gonna happen. It was safe to say I was covered in s***e. Just accepted it & just tried to put some slap on over the mud all over me.
Me & Jane went straight to the little bar being manned by a senior cowboy called Alan...so cute! We started by buying a bottle of fizzy wine which they had listed as 'giggle juice'. Sounds like trouble? Oh it was!
We then had nibbles of goat, a starter of a curry soup which yes I ate and thought it was bloody gorgeous, can you believe it? Then we had a big steak & veg dinner. Was the nicest food I've had in OZ. Just awesome.
After dinner Alan sat down & told us all about the history of the cattle farm & then taught us how to crack a full leather whip. Speed of sound watch out! CRACK! Then we all had to ride the mechanical bull which was so old & violent that we had to sign our lives away for risk of death! As always watching bull riding is hilarious & everyone fell off pretty quick. Somehow I stayed on the longest & won a free party bus ticket to use in Cairns. I gave it to Jane as I was only going to be in Cairns for one night.
The rest of the night was spent drinking insane amounts of giggle juice! I think I bought about 6 bottles, we got a free bottle from Brent (another cowboy) for being good fun & I think a couple others bought some too! We played drinking games with the staff: I have never, Paranoia and Who the f***.
People started going to bed, but me & Logan stayed up & kept on drinking. Think we went to bed in a giggly drunken state at about 2 or half 2. Had so much fun.
Best day in OZ and they are looking for staff! 1 year working OZ visa anyone? My God I'm tempted to go back & work there. I love Kroombit!
