Becky Bravo's Adventures
We arrived at our first port!! We were all very excited after having been at sea for two days to get off the ship and be on land. I can't imagine how we are all going to feel when arriving in Brazil after about a week of being at sea. This morning before we got off the ship, we were lucky enough to have the Governor of San Juan come aboard and welcome us. He gave a very nice speech and I posted a picture of him next to the Archbishop Desmond Tutu. (The Governor is the one in the tan suit and striped tie.) It took a while for everybody to get organized and off the ship. Once off, I went with a friend down to Old San Juan and did some sight seeing. Then I came back to the ship for a while, met up with some other people, then walked back to Old San Juan once again. There are a lot of fun tourist shops and little local shops to see. And the water here is just beautiful. I didn't really know what to expect to see when I got here, but it is far more beautiful here then I imagined. This evening I attended a welcome reception at Caribbean University. It was amazing. When the busses drove up there were drummers and dancers and a whole welcome committee to greet us. Then they gave us a very heartwarming welcome presentation and then the festivities began. They had awesome food. (as far as I could tell, I didn't eat any because I wasn't sure what did and did not have meat) and we got to watch some traditional dances and we got to dance as well. The students danced with us and taught us some steps. Everybody was so nice and friendly and fun. It was really amazing. I posted a picture of me with a couple of the girls I hung out with there, and then there is one with me and three of the students that attend Caribbean University. And there is a picture of the dancers. It was an awesome cultural experience. I couldn't have chosen anything better to be my first one. I will have more stories tomorrow, but I am going to bed now, I have to be up SUPER early. I have an 8AM hike through the rainforest scheduled and then for the rest of the day I do not know what is up. I hope to hit up a drug store and possibly the internet café so I can post more wonderful blogs for you fine people. ;)
