After a rather sleepless night in zurich due to the thousands of fire crackers going off in celebration of Swiss Day we arrived in Cairo. We had pre organised a transfer with our hotel - thank god - and had our first experience of driving in cairo, a real white knuckle experience as a passenger! But we arrived in one piece.
Egypt was to be our "cheap" part of our trip and I had booked basic accommodation which I was a little dubious about, especially when we were told to lower your standards of clean in egypt. Arriving in our room you could see what they meant... it wasn't the best, but it had aircon and a tv so not all bad.
The next day we were heading out on a tour with a guide we'd hired but decided to take advantage of the breakfast that was included with our room beforehand. It was simple, bread, fruit and a boiled egg but when we looked at the fruit it made our stomachs turn as it was rotten with holes in it, so no breakfast for us!
Having the guide was great. We had 2 days and got to see so much like the Cairo Museum,Giza pyramids, markets, Mosques, churches etc. It was very hot but not unbearable which was good.
After the 2nd day we both had funny tummy's despite the hundred tablets I'd brought to try to prevent it and avoiding tap water. It also wasn't helped by the fact that we really weren't eating because we were too afraid. And by the 3rd day Kane was really quite sick. By now we had had enough of our nasty "hotel" and decided to upgrade for our stay in Luxor to a nice resort so we wouldn't have to worry about food and can rest up. It was this that got us through the rest of Cairo.
