Retired & Traveling
I was right--6:00 am was way too early, but we had to meet at 8:00 for another tour, so up and at 'em!! After a quick bite, we met up with our group for a tour of the city with a guide named Catherine. She had a Russian accent but was able to be understood about 95% of the time. :)) We stopped off at the Spilled Blood church and it was raining at this point. Not hard but enough to hurry us along. I wanted to get a group photo but the darned selfie stick wouldn't cooperate. Arghh! We got taken to a Russian coffee shop for a refreshment break. This included chocolate cake and treats. Apparently the Russians are known for their chocolate. Who knew?? Since I had just eaten breakfast, I sampled the cake and sweets, but mostly drank the coffee. Next on the agenda was a trip to the food market. What an experience that was!! So many fresh vegetables, meats and cheeses and all sold from individual vendors. The guide told us that dickering was encouraged but nobody in our group bought anything. The subway was right next to the market, and once we had our tokens, we were good to go. I was expecting a dirty, dingy and old subway but was pleasantly surprised with one that was the exact opposite! It was the cleanest and prettiest subway system I have ever been in! Once I get back home, I will upload the pictures I took, too many to post now. We had to change trains and all 40 of us managed to make it to our destination without getting lost. The destination was the Chocolate Museum, which turned out to be a place where they have a lot of chocolate for sale--a bit of a disappointment. We went to a gift shop next where I picked up a few souvenirs and then it was time to return to the ship. We were all hungry since it was after 1:00, so we paid the Trident Grill another visit for a burger and a hot dog. Since we had had such a busy day and late night, we spent the rest of the afternoon watching a movie on our tv (Wild) and took a nap. After dinner, we went to the Princess Theater and saw a magician, Michael Barron. He was amazing! We ride bikes tomorrow in Helsinki, praying for a nice weather day!!
