Retired & Traveling
Our hotel had a nice little spread for breakfast, including large cups of coffee (a rarity here in France), so we lingered for a while in the small cafe area. We planned our day looking at the guide books we'd picked up from the tourism office the day before, and most importantly, programmed the GPS to make sure we could get to Omaha Beach. We could, so off we went. By this time, we were both feeling pretty confident about navigating in France, especially on the roundabouts and only had one little boo boo. It was easily remedied though, so it wasn't a big deal. The further we drove, the prettier the day became until it was bright and sunny, although quite cold at 4 degrees Celsius--not sure what that is in Fahrenheit, haven't had a chance to look it up yet. (Just did--it's 39, brrr) Anyway, we found the museum and had arrived right as they opened. It was colder inside than out, so we bundled up and started looking around. There are a lot of displays with original items used during WWII, with sound effects and all kinds of mannequins wearing original uniforms, etc. A film started not long after we arrived, so we watched and saw a lot of real footage from that day--very hard to watch knowing what those men faced! Most of them were so young--such a tragic part of our history. After the film was over, we toured a bit more and then left for the American Cemetery memorial. This museum was so much better than the Omaha one and it was free! Ashley--they had a whole section describing the inflatables and showed a short film on them! :)) We left the museum and headed out to tour the grounds and see the multitude of graves. We both got very choked up over this--it's so moving. By this time, we were hungry so after a bit of searching, we found a restaurant that specialized in crepes but ordered some salad and sausage instead. Back on the road to explore some more of the memorials and then we were on our way to Caen. We needed to get gas for the car and that turned out to be an ORDEAL, let me just say. They hide the gas stations for one thing and if you can see them, you can't figure out how to get to them! We finally got the GPS to help us and then had to deal with how to pay/pump/speak French. LOL We managed though, and started on the way to drop off the car. This meant driving into the center of the city and our nerves were just about shot at this point. We managed to find the Hertz office and after a couple more roundabouts, got the car turned in. Whew!! We were ready for some adult beverages at this point and found the nearest bar to wait for our train. Our seats were much nicer on the train back to Paris and the train seemed to go much faster. We caught a subway back to the neighborhood and found out our tour for the champagne region had been cancelled. :(( I found another tour company to take us tomorrow, though, so hopefully it will all work out well. They are picking us up at 7:00, so I'm heading to bed, it's been a long but fun day!
