Red Rock Canyon State Park is a beautiful place, but this morning, it's fly city. Tons of them. We carried a whole family of them with us for twenty miles.
First stop was the Stafford Air and Space Museum in Weatherford, OK. Lt. Gen. Tom Stafford is a local boy, so they’re kinda proud of him. And rightly so. He was, among other things, a test pilot and an astronaut in the Gemini and Apollo missions. Lots of stuff to look at. One of the things was an actual moon rock! We needed a magnifying glass to see it. It’s encased in acrylic, and in our picture, it shows up white, due to the way they had it lighted. It actually looks like a rock. Another Wow. Everything else was very interesting.
We were getting hungry for lunch, so we read about a restored diner in Clinton, OK, on the grounds of a Route 66 Museum. We stopped there, all excited about getting a hamburger and a milkshake, found the diner, and it was just like the diners of the '50s. Except it was just a display for the museum. They didn’t sell anything. Ah well.
We went into the museum and asked if there were any diners around. One young lady said there was a nice place called (something like) the Katy Diner in Elk City, about 30 minutes west. Off we went. The Garmin took us someplace that was not a diner; in fact it was mostly residential. We drove downtown and asked directions. This young lady knew the place, said it’s just down the road we’re on and over the tracks, but it’s called The Depot now. You can’t miss it. We missed it. Turned around and looked again, then found it. Closed. So we parked in their parking lot and made sandwiches.
After lunch, we found a barbershop, complete with barber pole outside. Now, one of my things that I want to do is get my hair cut (and I need it) in a small town barbershop (think Floyd’s in Mayberry). This is the first one we’ve found (a lot of hair salons; I guess cowboys are finicky these days). Take a close look at the hours of the barbershop. This was Saturday, and the time was 2:40 pm. Do the math. I’m still looking.
Moved on. Crossed into Texas at 3:55 pm. Around 4:00, we switched drivers.
We stopped in Conway, Tx, to see the Slug Bug Ranch. Actually, it’s five VW bugs buried nose-first into the ground. It apparently is a spoof on the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, where ten Cadillacs are buried nose-first into the ground. That one is here in Amarillo, and we expect to see it tomorrow.
