Arrived in Mt Abu - a small village set in the mountains, located at the highest point in Rajasthan - where we stayed for 2 nights. Stayed in a hotel perfect for backpackers where we could get good food, beer, and sit around fires at night. We ventured into the village on arrival to see some guy being carted around in some chariot type thing, surrounded by dancers and people throwing petals and garlands at him. Never did find out who he was, but after several conversations with the locals narrowed it down to a) he is a famous priest who has been practising for 50 years b) he's celebrating 50 years of marriage c) he escaped from the forest 50 years ago... some language barriers we think!
Went on a horse ride to sunset point - there seems to be one everywhere we go! Later we visited the local 'game zone' to practice on the motorbike racing game in preparation for hiring a scooter tomorrow. The games machine was so old, the images looked like the ones you need 3D glasses for to see properly.
Hired a scooter the following day to visit the surrounding Jain and Hindu temples, the Peace Garden, and the highest point in Rajasthan. It was a great insight to see people practising their religion, praying and in ceremony at the temples, rather than full of tourists as they have been prior to Mt Abu. Today was the first time either of us have ridden a scooter and we really got into the spirit of the thing, beeping the horn at every opportunity - at other bikes, monkeys, corners, grass...etc. Becky might need a bit more practise!
Met some absolutely awsome people here; Zait, Sebastian, Linda & Ferri who we caught the bus with to Udaipur. You will hear more about them in the following entries...
