Khajaraho is the town of erotic temples, so off we went to play 'spot the dirtiest sculpture' game! There were many to choose from... according to one of the sculptures, even horses can be man's best friend!
There are 3 sets of temples here, the largets of which are the Western Temples followed by the Eastern and finally Southern. We visited the first 2, as we were only here for a couple of days, and Becks was getting pretty bored of playing Where's Willy.
The town is pretty small - with the same community feel as Pushkar. A local guy called Shadab took us under his wing! Having been his best friend for 30 mins, it was time for him to take us to his home - so his father could give us some Chai, and they could both sell their jewellery to the captured/captive audience!
Having met a couple of other backpackers we hired bicycles on the 2nd day to go to the Eastern Temples. Lovely little ride - passed Hotel Gaylord, and RimJimmy!!! On the way we stopped for a bite to eat in Fat Albert's. The menu looked promising, but service even for a coke/sprite was 30 mins! After all of the usual jokes about having to kill the chicken/ growing the rice we realised, they had absolutely no supplies - every time someone ordered something, a kid jumped on his bike and rode to the shops by our hotel! When the food did get some delicious food... eventually!
A kid gave us a guided tour of one of the remote Old Villages, complete with markers on the roads to differentiate the areas of the different Castes. It was in the lowest caste when decided we had to leave - its not often you see a elderly lady squatting in the middle of the road! Fair enough, we've seen some horrible things in the last few weeks, but this just took the ....
Going off to Varanassi tonight... we've been told by our guide book, and other people, that those "squatting experiences" are going to go down hill from here!
