So, first week in South America and the next leg of the trip! 24 hours later and we arrived in Lima, Peru.
Didn't know what to expect from Lima or South America and only herd a few things. Strangest feeling in the city was that downtown, the coastal district and the main tourist areas were exactly like a Spanish city would be. Obviously expecting Spanish influence from the colonial era but unbelievable how much of the culture remains!
Hit all the main sites, day tour around the old town with a local guide, catacombs, local markets and an evening in the coastal district of Barranco. Had a great little find of a park with 14 amazing fountains and an evening display that rivalled the best we've seen anywhere.
Spent a bit of time chilling down the coastal parks and munching local food which was always impressive. Tried loads of local dishes, some pure guess work, some with the help of our translation app! Although didn't go adventurous as to try Ceviche!
Hostel was cool and had a pet, a Peruvian hairless dog, very strange!
Going from mid 30s in Asia and expecting the same was a culture shock! Weather was cold(ish) one minute and boiling the next! With only one set of warm clothes for the next 8 months, it's safe to say I donned the same outfit most of the week!
Herd a few stories about the dangers when travelling the city by night but we met nothing but friendly people, in all areas.
Starting to attempt to learn Spanish now as well! 8 months in Spanish speaking counties, we're hoping to have at least a basic understanding by next summer!
Up and onto Iquitos next... The start of the Amazon part of the trip!
