The main purpose of our visit to Cusco was seeing Machu Picchu and it didn't disappoint. One of the best tours and most amazing things I've ever seen!
A lot of people follow the ancient Inca Trail but it means 4 days of continuous trekking up and down mountains leading up to Machu Picchu. We went for the 'adventure' option with some hiking but loads of other bits and it was definitely the right choice!
On the first day we did 55km of mountain biking. Amazing views, also mostly downhill so we picked up some speed down a road winding through a beautiful canyon! Chilled that afternoon in prep for a big day trekking!
By 6am the next day we were on the road! The trekking was made up of a creepy abandoned town (everyone left after the floods), lowlands, mountain paths, river banks and even 1km of one of the original Inca Trails! We finished up by about 5.30pm and ended with a few hours chilling in natural hot springs! Great end to an amazing day. The trek was hard at times but the views were well worth it!
We started the 3rd day zip lining 3km across one of the canyons surrounding Machu Picchu, then an afternoon trek to the town which lies under the famous ancient ruins!
On the day of the trek up to Machu Picchu it's another early start. At 5am we were ready to scale the 2000 steps up to the entrance. They say doing it in under an hour is good, I managed 40 minutes with a few of the other guys in our group not too far behind! After the 3 days we'd had we were well happy with ourselves!
Up inside the ruins the jungle mist lay over the site until about 11am and although it blocked some of the views the eerie look it gave was pretty cool. After the mist cleared the views were amazing! Our guide who had been with us throughout the trip spent a few hours explaining the Inca history and all about the ruins.
How it was ever built in such a terrain is unbelievable! It has to be up there with one of the most impressive things I've ever seen! Yet another World wonder visited on the trip and definitely up there with the best! The complexity of the buildings even down to things like the irrigation, the sky observatory and even the fact it's built on the top of a steep jungle mountain! The pictures will have to do the rest of the explaining!
After Machu Picchu we took a ride on the famous Peruvian train and then headed back to Cusco. The overall 4 days was definitely one of the best trips we've been on so far, the sights, the scenery, the people, the guide and even the food was great! To end on Machu Picchu was the icing on the cake!
Over the 4 days we did 55km of mountain biking, 45km of trekking, 3km of zip lining and about 5000 stairs climbed...!
Few more days in Cusco then onward bound!
