Habbekrats. Het was een habbekrats. I would define it in english as being extremely cheap. Surprisingly for an islamic island that it is THE outmost island to splurge in the one thing that is forbidden for muslims.
Booze. And cigarettes, but the islanders are allowed to smoke. We got told by Dave ( an englishman) that 60 % of the people in malaysia is malayan( the rest is of the population is either chinese or indian). And being malayan means automatically that you HAVE to be muslim. There even is a non official police force on the island who breaks into nightclubs to see if the malayan people behave and don't drink or show affection to girls. Because if they get caught they are in big trouble. Luckily for us we are not malayan nor muslim so we could drink all that we wanted.
The reason that the island is cheap in terms of alcohol and cigarettes is because it is a completely tax free zone. For some reason that we could not find out. The islanders did not know either.
Where my previously blog ended it did not mention that we met 3 people on the ferry to langkawi. Taren ( Canadian) and a couple Dave & Catherine ( English) who have been travelling the world this past 5 years being on an extreme low budget. Nothing near what we have calculated for our own. They use 10 pounds a day and have been everywhere. We got quite some usefull tips on how to make things low cost for us as well. They highly recommended couchsurfing and hitch hiking. We are going to try couch surfing in a few weeks.
A yes one last thing about drinks and cigarettes, I want you to make a guess. We bought : a sixpack of beer, a liter bottle of bacardi razz, a package of black devils ( those extremely nasty vanilla cigarettes) and a carton(slof) of camel..... You are probably not even close. 100 ringitt which is 25 euros!
The only downside is that we can't take any of this into Singapore :( We found out after I wanted to buy a bottle of whiskey one day later. So we have 4 lungpoisoning nights to look forward to :P
Now enough of what we bought. We did a remarkable thing in Langkawi. We rented a scooter to drive around for a full day. After being everywhere. From north to south and east to west. We came on a road and saw a few things move in the distance. Coming closer and closer we noticed that it were around 30 monkeys next to the road. They ran in front of the scooter and clearly weren't afraid of us. We parked the scooter a little further and walked back. I did not know what to expect so was very carefull untill I was amidst them. They found me very scary because they made all kind of noises. But when I got a bag of sunflowerpits out of my bag they all grew quiet. I threw some first and after that I handed them out. It turned out that they were not aggresive at all. And they were extremely funny to feed.

David Hagan Nice blog, we are actually couchsurfing on Langkawi at the moment and enjoying it very much, no more beer after the other night though - but still eating lots and lots of roti canai...
