Carnarvon to Coral Bay
Before leaving Carnarvon we have some house keeping to do re the van, particularly, fill the drinking watertank and and the diesel as we are told there are limited supplies north. Most important of all was to find a shop open to get a toaster, wine glasses and extra food. Success on this front today.
Once under way we soon began to appreciate even more the vastness of the country and the total lack of human life in the more remote parts of Australia. The vegetation became less with more just sand and scrub;desolate but strangely beautiful. You could see huge distances, almost a never ending vista. Occasionally we'd see a road sign to some settlement up to 200 Km down a dirt road but no habitat. We saw two emus on the road who just glanced in our direction as we stopped to let them amble across the road, a few goats and sheep in the fields and again hardly another car. Just before getting to Coral Bay we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn.
Approaching Coral Bay it was even more sparse and more small salt pans. Pulling into Coral Bay though was to arrive at a tropical paradise, a wide curving bay edged in white sand and the sea shading from the palest of blues to a dark blue with breakers in the distance crashing over the outer reef.
Into a caravan park where we secured the last space over looking the bay 100m from the beach. We quickly set up and went down to the beach. It was wonderful with absolutely clear warm water and small Rays swimming by our feet, numerous small fish and some much larger - bliss. There were hardly any other people on the beach, a couple snorkelling and a few like us cooling off.
A beautiful sunset with a glass of wine and our first barbecue was a perfect end to an excellent day.
