Another early start this morning after a good night's sleep.
We were up at 6.00 am and Lisanne joined us in Harvey for breakfast at 7.00 am. We were out of the caravan park fairly soon after that, and immediately headed to the service station to fuel up. Then on to the Serbian underground church, which was beautiful. Another stop at the supermarket to stock up on drinks, and we were off!
I wanted to write that it was a long, uneventful drive today on Stuart Highway. The longest so far - 541 km (and hopefully the longest drive on this trip for Lisanne). However, we did have a minor bit of excitement: a road train overtaking us, passed us, and 200 metres futher, blew a tyre! So there was rubber flying all over the place. We were ok, and the road train was ok, so all was good.
Lisanne saw many emus! First a group of 3, then 7, and then 6. Emus everywhere!
It's a different type of landscape along here. We've seen lots of desert so far, and although it's still hot and dry here, there is more greenery in the form of scrub, low bushes and even some small trees. Ideal territory for emus and kangaroos.
We were joined on the road by road-trains, semi-trailers, cars towing caravans and camper trailers, as well as motorhomes and tow trucks.
We had lunch in Harvey at Glendambo, where some trucks pulled in carrying two loads of enormous truck tyres. These weren't just normal truck tyres, but were tyres destined for huge mining dump trucks!
Part of our drive today along Stuart Highway took us over a short stretch which is used by the Royal Flying Doctor Service as an emergency landing strip. So we were literally driving on the road and an airstrip at the same time!
We stopped along the way to admire Lake Hart and other Island Lagoon Lake. A very different type of lake!
Tonight we are in Port Augusta, which is Lisanne's southern-most point of her trip. Port Augusta is located on the Spencer Gulf in South Australia. We might have a swim or a paddle in the Gulf before jumping in the pool at the caravan park.
BBQ for dinner tonight, followed by a nice glass of cool wine.
Tomorrow we head a north-easterly direction to Broken Hill in New South Wales.
Photos to follow.
