We started our day at Coober Pedy by walking to the Visitor Information Centre for a map. We met a nice guy there who gave us all sorts of useful information.
During the morning we visited the Big Winch lookout, for a great view of Coober Pedy. Then we walked down the hill to look at an underground church, followed by the Comfort Inn Hotel, where the staff were very happy for us to wander through their hallways, and peek into the rooms. An entire hotel, carved into the mountain, it was entirely underground. It used to be an old opal mine, and they still kept the old mine parts intact, whilst creating an hotel around it. It still look very comfortable and felt very spacious.
Then we went to the Old Timer's Mine, which was fascinating. We all went down into the mine, although Mirne quickly came back up again. Too closed in down there for her! Craig and Lisanne reported it was fascinating. Not just the mine, but also the underground house which was attached. There was also a very interesting museum as well.
Then off we went to Faye's Underground House. By this time it was very, very hot outside, so when we got to Faye's and heard we'd have to wait, we were disappointed. However, the kind lady gave us a coffee and some nice cold water, and we eventually got the tour. An amazing 3-bedroom house, entirely carved out of the rock, underground. Craig and Lisanne again went into the mine, whilst Mirne waited in the cool of the underground house.
Back to the caravan park for a well-deserved dip in the ice-cold pool. This pool is enclosed in a silo! Yes, it keeps the sun off the water, which means we get to enjoy the fresh cool water.
By 5.00 pm we were ready for our Sunset Tour. Our caravan park host, George, took us in a beat-up bus (with airco) to the Breakaways, the Moon Plain and the Dingo Fence. Absolutely beautiful and fascinating!
The Breakaways are simply stunning, the Moon Plain is vast and empty, and the Dingo Fence is 5,300 km long (when originally built it was over 9,000 km long). It currently stretches from the coast in South Australia to the Gold Coast in Queensland.
We watched the sun set ovet the Breakaways and the Moon Plain, whilst having a cup of tea and a muffin :-)
Back in town just after 8.00 pm, we made a quick stop at the underground Catholic church, before finishing off with a lovely meal at a local pizzaria.
Back to the caravan park at 9.30 pm, for a nice cool glass of wine and some star-gazing.
A very hot, busy day.
Off to Port Augusta tomorrow - a long drive.
