JJ's Big Adventure
Before reading this journal entry, you should read the Hong Kong journal entry in order to gain a basis for comparison. In short, Singapore was very similar to Hong Kong but......
less crowded
less expensive
way, way, way more laid back
far more culturally and ethniclly diverse (Arab District, Little India, Chinatown, Colonial District)
you still had to "mind the gap", but it was "mind the PLATFORM gap" instead
The Changi Prison Museum was far better than the photos can show. Unfortunately photos were not allowed. I got busted as soon as I snapped off my first one (damn flash). There was a since of reverence there that can't be put into words. Man those folks suffered.
The Battle Box Museum was first rate. It was where the Brits had their HQ when Singapore fell to Japan. The guy who gave the tour was seven years old when Japan first occupied Singapore (ten at the end of the occupation). He saw the fall of Singapore, experienced the occupation, and the return to the Brits first hand. While not always 100% accurate (unbiased), his stories about the time were told from the heart. It was by far the best part of the trip.
Now I hinted that Singapore was clean when I used my Hong Kong journal as a point of reference. However, I still don't think that you can appreciate just exactly how clean. Littering and spitting are illegal. This law is taken to heart so much that you can enter the subway station and not see a single trash can once you are inside the "ticketed" area. You can then get onto the subway and ride all day long. All the while, you will not see a single piece of trash on the floor in either the subway station or on the subway itself.
