I didn't want to dive too often because of my heart. I don't want to push it and do multiple dives a day over several days but these 3 dives within 24 hours were worth it !
This morning's dive was a shard dive and more precisely a bull shark dive. I only saw a bull shark once before, in the Maldives so I was really keen to do this dive.
As we were travelling towards the site I could see another 2 boats heading to the same direction and was afraid we'd end up as a massive group of divers on the same spot when there was no other dive boat around and and so many dive sites diver free.
I was right.Even worst !! One of the dive shop (both boats were from different islands/resorts) feeds the sharks twice a week. Being totally against shark (or any other wild animal, for that matter) feeding, I wasn't that excited anymore to see shark. I'd rather see less of them than a lot but knowing they're here because of the food they're being given. We hovered somewhere close to the group for a few minutes then Geoff (the dive instructor) told us we'd go for a swim and come back when the shark feeders are gone. We still saw plenty of reef shark during our dive around the reef but as we came back the other divers were already on their safety stop (after their 15/20 min dive, just the time of the feeding). That's when we approached the shark a little bit. And spotted 4 bull sharks at the bottom, along with so many smaller reef sharks. I'm not afraid of sharks, far from that, they fascinate And I really love them, don't get me wrong, but knowing they'd just been fed by human hands and that we were about 10 above them, hovering in mid water, I thought we might be easy targets. So again, I wasn't scared but I didn't feel as safe as usual knowing humans had just interfered with nature...
In the afternoon, Birgit (an Austrian girl staying in the same dorm as me) and I went for a walk along the beach. We found a mango tree and brought back about 3 kg of them :) I love them so much when they come straight from the tree !! On our way back we met a local who works at our resort and lives in the village on the other side of the island, like most of the staff. It takes her 1 hour walk on the beach to go to work and the same to get back in the evening. She and the rest of the staff living in the village only got to take the boat to work when the tide is high and they can't reach the other beach because of the water. 2h walk in this sand a day is pretty tiring, I'm telling you !
When we got back I took Birgit snorkelling. She can swim but never could figure out how to breath through her mouth only. Therefore she never snorkelled before and being in Fiji without sticking your head in the water is something I cannot imagine. So in order to challenge my instructor skills and because Birgit is really cool, I took up the challenge. And she did great !! And because she's leaving on monday (48h after her 1st snorkeling session) I offered to take her night snorkeling the next day.
