Simons Town
Atlantis made it safely to Simons Town in a record time. With speeds up to 13.5 kts and an average of just above 7 kts, she became even faster after her rebuild and increased buoyancy at the stern. Well done Dawie (responsible for the work) and thanks to Coplan Boats.
My theory that out of all negative events in life something positive evolves seems correct again. Atlantis had a makeover and she just became better and stronger than before the accident.
For this trip I had the privilege to sail with Eileen, who is a very experienced ocean sailor and racer. Thanks for the excellent team work Eileen!
After a rather hectic start with big swells, which gave both Eileen and myself a goodby shower from Struisbaai, Atlantis took off as a fighter plane. Maybe the wings at the back Mr. Coplan?
Neptune had decided that I would enter Struisbaai wet and leave it wet. So be it...he was angry. The sea around Cape Aghulas might be hostile, but the people living there compensate largely for it. Thanks again to all the people that helped me during my 1 month ashore.
For almost the whole 105 NM we had nice wind and waves coming from the back, ideal conditions for Atlantis. The gods were favourable to us today. She seemed to enjoy every moment of it, and even decided to gibe by herself if she felt uncomfortable...but she did it in silence without even asking for the attention of the skipper. She seems to have a will of her own. Naughty Atlantis!
No traffic on our course, except for that one sailboat that was trying to pass Atlantis close to Hermanus... but not a chance!! We were far ahead and Atlantis wouldn't give in. Maybe she also wanted to show her potential to Eileen, a keen racer.
The approach of Simons Town marina was a "peace of cake" at night, thanks to Eileen who lives there, the chart plotter and the iPad navigation system, all combined.
Finding the swing mooring in the dark was another challenge, but Eileen who was at the bow, armed with a torch and hook, guided me safely through other yachts and hooked us safely on.
The Atlantic Ocean is more predictable than the Indian Ocean, therefore we are pleased to have this part behind us and are getting ready for the big moment.... The crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.
