Anchored in the most beautiful Plettenberg Bay after a single handed sail of 34 hours. Skipper and boat are tired but satisfied to have made it in the protected bay of Plettenberg just in time before a predicted storm.
All crew left Atlantis after the sail from Durban to Port Elisabeth, as some people still have to work or study ! (shame) It was a difficult decision to continue the trip alone, but the satisfaction was great once the anchor dropped at the destination. Atlantis and skipper became closer than ever.
Weather conditions during the trip were (as always on the Indian Ocean) difficult to predict. Too much or too little wind, high waves from the wrong direction and some rain....they say a sailor is never satisfied.
Another boat (Marimba) with Eileen and Mark on board decided to do the same voyage together with Atlantis. It was great to have company on the Ocean and ....some competition. During the whole trip we remained in contact via the VHF radio to exchange weather info and sailing tactics. I could learn a lot from Eileen's experience as a competitive Ocean Master and racer.
The most difficult part was to manage sleep in 20' short naps and keep alert for other ships or changes in wind direction and speed. James, my autopilot did a wonderful job....it would have been hard without him. Thanks mate!! I would also like to thank Helen and Jim for keeping in touch via the cellphone and give moral support.
The next trip will bring us to Knysna and Mossel Bay. Plettenberg Bay is one of the most beautiful places in South Africa and we have an exclusive spectacular view of it from our anchorage. Best things in life are free !!
