Yesterday we did the usual morning swim, had noodles from a street stall and headed to the beach. It was scarily wild!!! The waves were massive and making so much noise compared to last time we went to the beach. I was actually really scared as the tide had come in and there wasn't much beach left to walk down. Plus all I could think of was 'tsunami'. I know, I know, it didn't even hit this island and you'd need an earthquake first, but all the guidebooks seem to love mentioning it.
So we set off walking down the beach, towards the apparently better one. Ben was loving it, I was keeping my eye on what the sea was doing. We walked, walked and walked all the way down the beach until we couldn't anymore due to rocks. So we went to the main road and walked again, until there was more beach to get onto. This beach was a bit more rocky, so we walked down this until it ended, playing with a few hermit crabs along the way and then we had to walk through some coconut trees to the next beach. This was a small, empty beach, with smooth sand and the palms making it look like your typical deserted island. It was gorgeous. We spent some time there and headed back to the main road. A sign said we had walked 2km so we got a taxi back. We went for more swimming (definitely got our money's worth with the pool!) and then sat on our little terrace with a beer drying off whilst the sun went down. It was glorious. Until the mosquitos came to spoil it all. They're big here. And I really hate them. I hate how they float around your room like they own it and know that in a few seconds, if you don't get them, they would have disappeared into the background. I'm sure most of our time in the room is spent looking for ones we've just seen.
We got a taxi up to the main part of the island for something different for tea and found a really good restaurant. Instead of having a beer as we'd already had one, we treated ourselves to some food a little bit more expensive and it was well worth it. It was definitely the most restauranty place we've been to since we've been away as well. It was very enjoyable (I had a pot cooked red curry, shock).
Tomorrow we head to Ko Phi Phi, made famous by 'The Beach' being filmed there. It's just under 2 hours by ferry. We're going to be real travellers as well and just turn up without booking anything, the first time we would have done this. Everything is more or less together (they don't have proper roads here) and the accommodation is expensive, but still has lots of faults from the reviews. So if we turn up, we can see the room before parting with any money and barter on the price as it's low season, which you can't do either on the internet. This could be brilliant or result in 2 very hot, grumpy people with very heavy backpacks on!
Today we just lazed about by the pool and made friends with a very nice Swedish female couple with their child. We spent some time with them in the pool this morning, had drinks with them by the pool at sunset and went over to their bungalow this evening. They are very nice. This is the first place that we've been sad to leave. We thought about staying another night but as it's our first island we could equally love other places and if not, we could always come back next time we're in Thailand on our way down to Malaysia.
Well, hopefully tomorrow won't be too much hassle and we'll find somewhere to sleep ok!!
