Tuesday night was fun. Khao San Road is a bit like a bar street, but with lots of stalls, restaurants, things like leg massages for £2 and the fish feet! I had a red curry for tea, it was so nice. My favourite meal so far I think. The curries are so amazing.
We went to meet Hollie and Sam and had a good few hours with them. It was so good to see Hollie and Sam seems really nice too. They've already done Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam so had lots of tips/useful information for us. We found out how Hollie broke her foot. It was in a tuk tuk accident (as if I'm not scared enough in them anyway!) although it was pretty unlucky as a dog had run right out infront of them, leaving the driver no chance and the tuk tuk overturned. Hollie said the worst injuries were from being dragged along the floor so all her legs and arms had been scraped badly and grit off the road was in them. Ouch.
We found a bar to watch the football which started at 1.45am. There were some Schalke fans in but they didn't make noise for long. The highlight for me was a guy who came in with a Thai girl that looked like a prostitute and sat behind us. After 10 minutes I heard 'So, are you a ladyboy?' I nearly spat out my drink! I'd already seen the girl stood at the bar near me and she was a girl! I couldn't hear what she answered but was waiting for him to get a clip! 5 minutes later though, I heard 'Thank you for being honest with me....so when did you become a ladyboy?' hahaha. I would never have known! He was very petite! We got home very late and I was very unimpressed to see a cockroach the size of my face at the top of our stairs near the room. I have never seen one so big!!! Then there was a lizard by the bathroom. The bathroom is so hot, it's just full of mosquito's. It's horrible. The little things really scare me. That's the only thing now about moving into this part of Asia. Applying DEET all the time, plus suncream isn't much fun. And I'm not looking forward to taking the anti malarial tablets and using a mosquito net.
We were obviously more drunk and tired the next day than we realised and slept in til mid afternoon. We went on a massive laundry hunt which took hours and isn't that interesting. But we basically had a nightmare trying to use these washing machines just plugged in on the street. We had some street food near us for lunch, pretty bland but ok and cheap. Then later on went to Khao San Road for some clothes shopping, we definitely don't have enough clothes for this heat and are going to be throwing away some stuff soon that we brought with us. It was successful, I got a dress and Ben got a vest top. We randomly bumped into Hollie and Sam again. They're heading off down to the islands tonight, so we should catch them up in a few weeks. We had more street food to balance out the clothes, pad thai. It was alright. All my street food is vegetarian by the way, I have learnt!
Today we went to the Grand Palace and to see a 45m long reclining Buddha. We could get a tuk tuk there for a third of the price they were all asking if we stopped at 1 shop, so I thought we should go for it. I thought they might have a few stalls together and try to offer us drinks or something. But no, it was a suit shop. It all looked very nice but Ben doesn't need a suit for another 9 months. Plus they won't be as cheap as Vietnam. When we were firm, the guy got pretty angry, saying it wasn't a museum and to waste someone else's time-gladly!! The Buddha was massive!!! The palace was pretty spectacular as well. You had to cover up so I had taken my sarong to use as a long skirt over my shorts and a tshirt to change into from my vest top. I'm pretty sure it's not a religious thing, they just like to see foreigners sweating on the verge of passing out!! I have never been that hot and uncomfortable!! We went back to the cat restaurant near us for lunch (red curry again, mmmm!) and the gay waiter was saying that he's the one marrying Prince William tomorrow!!
Tonight is our last night in Bangkok for now, we will have to come back at some point I'm sure. We're looking to head to a night market for tea where there is supposed to be live music, and maybe have a look at the biggest red light district in Bangkok nearby.
Tomorrow we head to Kanchanaburi which is west from Bangkok, around 3 hours away. It is where the Bridge of the River Kwai is, Death Railway, Tiger Temple where monks look after rescued tigers, the floating markets and a monkey school where orphaned monkeys learn how to pick coconuts and they do some kind of show as well! Next door to our hostel is a swimming pool which you can use for £2/day so I have a feeling that we will be there quite a lot!! Off to have a cold shower now!!
