Our SE Asia Tour 2013
Definitely due a sleep-in today. Staying at a nice little hotel in the old quarter near the Hoan Kiem lake with a restaurant on the top floor with a view to the lake on one side and to the river on the other. After a leisurely breakfast we wandered around the old quarter and practiced our road crossing skills. Watching and joining in the chaos of Hanoi traffic is great fun. No one ever stops and bike riders never put a foot down. Traffic lights appear to be a suggestion only and are disregarded by most. The trick to crossing the road as a pedestrian appears to be just to sail across the road at a constant slow speed and direction and miraculously all the motor bikes and cars part around you. On no account should one move unpredictably or suddenly. Further entertainment can be had sitting with a coffee at a busy intersection and watching the flow. Traffic lights would never work. We poked around some galleries and antique shops and picked up a very nice old pot thing to add to our collection of other nice old things at home. Had a good dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant recommended by "our man at the hotel". Patronised by both locals and tourists it was a busy little place with shared tables. The Vietnamese mother and young son near us were tucking into a dish of silkworms. Needless to say we were not so adventurous. It seems that whatever you eat in Vietnam you get something stuck in your teeth and suffer cramp in your tongue trying to get it out. Forewarned, we now never venture out to eat without industrial strength pneumatic tooth picks.
