Our SE Asia Tour 2013
Just to keep in practice we awoke again before dawn and walked to the Wats to watch the monks receive their morning alms. Again we had mixed feelings about a traditional rite becoming a tourist attraction. At each of the temples there is information in many languages informing people how to behave (basically just to be respectful) but, of course, it doesn't work. About a third of the people get right in the face of the monks and let off their flashes. It's hard to say who are the worst, the Asians or the Europeans. We even had an appearance by some famous Thai "lady-boy" film star who came to give alms, complete with entourage and film crew ! Returned to the hotel for breakfast but it felt more like lunch and it was still only 8:00. Luang Prabang has a famous sausage which we had enjoyed as an entree on both nights at the Blue Lagoon and we couldn't resist it for breakfast as well. Mistake - but not too dire! More strolling about town today, this time down along the Nam Khan river to its confluence with the Mekong and then back down the Main Street. After exhausting the points of interest about town we decided on a massage. Relaxing, but these little Lao girls have only a fraction of the power of "Muscles Mike" at Indooroopilly. They are quite tiny so have to get up on the massage table to reach all the parts!! After relaxing with a ginger tea it was back to drinks and relax on our lovely hotel room terrace/balcony, shower and stroll down to town for dinner. Good Lao food at the Villa Santi in a beautifully restored old building.
