Our SE Asia Tour 2013
At last, a lie in and leisurely breakfast. We decided to postpone the dawn alms procession of monks until tomorrow morning at 5:30. A very leisurely stroll around the streets of LP. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and, unlike some others, is not a disappointment. Apart from the many wats (temples) there are some 400 traditional Lao and French colonial era buildings, which have been well restored, most of which are now restaurants, galleries and guest houses which will ensure their continued survival. I think LP comes across as a good example of tourism. Without it LP would probably have quietly decayed or even worse been Chineseified. It is a good place to spend a few days as the traffic is not bad, good food, the pace unhurried and the old wats and buildings delightful. Even the elephants now rely on the tourists for their continued survival now that the country has been logged out. Elephants cannot be let out into the wild as - there is no wild left and anyway, they could not fend for themselves in the wild. They are too expensive to keep as non-working "pets" so they now do treks and mahout courses for the tourists. Good for both tourists and elephants. Another excellent dinner at the Blue Lagoon. This time we had the Lao menu.
