Our SE Asia Tour 2013
We travelled 11 km out of Jaipur to visit the stunning impressive Amer Fort also known as Amber Fort. This was built in 1592 and is a superb example of Rajput architecture. This was originally the capital until it was moved to Jaipur.
It is an opulent palace complex built with red standstone and marble. The fort is divided into 4 main sections each with it's own entry gate and courtyard. One of the most striking buildings is the Sheesh Mahal (palace of Mirrors) which is decorated with exquisite glass inlaid panels and multi mirrored ceilings.
I found out courtesy of Wikipedia that there was a textile museum in Amber and after a few false turns we finally found it. It was housed in an old haveli which had been beautifully restored and was a great source of information about the history of Rajasthan's famous textiles and designs.
I was also interested in seeing some of Jaipur's famous pottery so we stopped at a ceramic outlet on the way back. It had some lovely pottery items which, unfortunately, were too bulky and heavy to pack into our luggage.
