Our SE Asia Tour 2013
After a short drive we started our uphill walk to the Kila nunnery at 3,500 m. The nunnery was first established as a meditation site in the 9th century and is reputedly the oldest nunnery in Butan. There are about 45 nuns resident here. Lunched inside the temple area as it had started to rain. The walk downhill back to the bus was equally pleasant with different views. Drove on via Chelela pass at 3,988 m. Managed to get a quick view of Chomolhari (7,326 m), a mountain in the Himalayas, straddling the border between Tibet, China and Bhutan. It is also the source of the Paro river. The weather at the top of the pass was very changeable and windy, and in a short period it managed to rain, hail and sleet.
Then it was downhill all the way into the lovely lush Haa valley. Much of the southern town of Haa is occupied by the Indian Military Training Team camp and a Bhutanese army training camp.
We continued on into the upper Haa valley to our hotel, the Lechuna Heritage Lodge located at an altitude of 2,960 m in the village of Lechu. It is a resotred farmhouse which has been in the family for 4 generations and has kept its original character. It is a three storey mansion built predominantly with rammed mud and timber frames. The rooms were very comfortable, though the very modern showers and toilets were shared. Dinner was served in a delightful dining room and was excellent.
